Surveying- II

Tutorial-1
Closing error and adjustments
1) The length and angles obtained in a closed traverse survey is given in table below. Find consecutive
coordinates; adjust themusing (a) Bowditch rule, (b) Transit rule, and find independent co-ordinates.
The bearing of AB was found to be 303000
Station Angles Line Length (m)
A 7331 AB 66.6
B 10742 BC 135.7
C 1878 CD 66.3
D 7730 DE 76.6
E 9407 EA 214.3

2) A link traverse was run between stations A and X. The co-ordinates of the controlling stations at the
ends of the traverse are as:
Stn E (m) N (m) Clockwise angle Line Distance (m)
A 1769.15 2094.72 1153700
B 1057.28 2492.39
X 2334.71 1747.32 1733100 4X 224.79
Y 2995.85 1616.18
1 1681910 A1 208.26
2 2811240 12 193.47
3 2425340 23 326.71
4 802620 34 309.15
Calculate the co-ordinates of stations 1,2,3 and 4, adjusting any misclosure by transit method.

3) Following is a closed traverse. Adjust it for closing error if any using:
i)Bowditch rule
ii) transit rule
Line AB BC CD DE EA
Length(m) 130 158 145 308 337
Bearing S 88 E S 6 E S 40 W N 81 W N 48 E

Omitted Measurements

4) The survey data of a traverse is given in table below. The length and bearing of one side were not
recorded during the survey. Find the missing measurements.
Line AB BC CD DA
Length(m) 201.8 288.4 192.6 Missing
Bearing N 4500 W N 6030 E S 3445 E Missing

5) Fromthe records available fromsurvey notes, it is observed that the lengths of two lines were not
readable. Fromthe available data given below, find the lengths of the two sides.
Line PQ QR RS ST TP
Length(m) 178.6 228.4 Missing Missing 238.8
Bearing S5230E N4845E N1815W S7830W S3230W

6) Due to some problems with equipment, the bearings of two sides were not taken for a closed traverse
ABCDEA. Fromthe available data, compute the bearings of the two sides.
Line AB BC CD DE EA
Length(m) 230.5 250.2 210.8 240.3 265.4
Bearing N3645E S8248E S1015E Missing Missing

7) A traverse ABCDEA was conducted and due to difficulties in the field, the bearing of line EA and
length of line DE could not be measured. Fromthe remaining data of the traverse, find the missing
quantities.
Line AB BC CD DE EA
Length(m) 301.5 288.4 199.5 Missing 201.4
Bearing N7430E S6015E S3045W N 8215W Missing

8) In conducting a traverse PQRSTP, the lengths of the lines QR and TP could not be measured correctly.
Find the lengths of these lines from the remaining data given below.
Line PQ QR RS ST TP
Length(m) 357.2 Missing 389.2 253.4 Missing
Bearing S5230E N4845E N1815W S7830W S3230W

9) Fromthe traverse data given below, find the length of CD and bearing of EA.
Line AB BC CD DE EA
Length(m) 178.6 228.4 Missing 126.7 238.8
Bearing S5230E N4845E N1815W S7830W Missing

10) In a closed traverse ABCDEA, the bearings of two lines could not be observed due to difficulties in the
field. Compute the bearings of the two lines fromthe data of the traverse below.
Line AB BC CD DE EA
Length(m) 230.5 250.2 210.8 240.3 265.4
Bearing N364500E S824800E Missing S630336W Missing

11) In a four sided closed traverse, the following information is given:
Side Length (m) Deflection Bearing Co-ordinates
AB 160 ? S40W
BC 340 116 left ? 26500mE, 22400mN
CD 210 60 left ?
DA ? ? ?

Other Problems
12) The following observations were taken fromstations P and Q. Calculate the length and bearing of AB,
and also the angles PAB and QBA.
Line Length (m) Bearings
PA 125.0 S 6030W
PQ 200.0 N3030E
QB 150.5 N 5015W

13) In an open traverse ABCDE, it is required to fix the midpoint of the line joining A and E. Find the
length and bearing of that point fromstation C, when the records of the traverse are as follows:
Line AB BC CD DE
Length(m) 130.5 215.0 155.5 120.0
Bearing N2030E N6015E S3030E N8030E
