Find the size of the sample if the S.D. of the population is 9 and there should be 0.09 confidence that the error estimate will not exceed 3. If the error of estimation will not exceed 0.49 with 0.95 probabilities and the sample size is 64. What is the S.D. of the population from which the sample has been drawn? A box is selected at random and a card is drawn. If the number is even, find the probability that the card is from box I. In a class 2% of boys and 3% of girls are having blue eyes. There are 30% girls in the class. If a student is selected and having blue eyes. What is the probability that the student is a girl? Determine the constant K, find mean and variance. 3 (a) Passengers arrive at an airport checkout counter at an average rate of 1.5 per minute. What are the probabilities that it will receive: (i) Four bad checks on any given day. The pulse rate of 50 yoga practitioners decreased on the average by 20.2 beats/min, with S.D. of 3.5. (i) If x = 20.2 is used as a point estimate of the true average decrease in pulse rate. What can we assert with 95% confidence about the maximum error E? (ii) Construct 99% confidence intervals for the true average decrease in pulse rate. In a city A 20% of a random sample of 900 school boys fad a certain slight physical defect. In another city B 18.5% of a random sample of 1600 school boys had the same defect. Is the difference between the proportions significant at 0.005 level of significance? The owner of a machine shop must decide which of the two snack vending machine to install in his shop. If each machine is tested 250 times, the first machine fails to work 13 times and the second machine fails to work 7 times. Test at 0.05 level of significance whether the difference between the corresponding sample proportions is significant? Fit a Poisson distribution to the following data and test the goodness of the fit at = 0.05 level of significance. A car park contains 5 cars. The arrival of cars is Poisson with a mean rate of 10 per hrs. The length of time each car spends in the car park has negative exponential distribution with mean 2 hrs. How many cars are in the car park on average and what is the probability of a newly arriving customer finding the car park full and having to park his car elsewhere?

Define unbiased estimator. What is the more efficient unbiased estimator, explain briefly? Show that x is an unbiased estimator of the population mean . Write about: (i) Critical region. (ii) Left tailed test. (iii) Right tailed test. A coin is tossed 9000 times and it falls 5 or 6 upwards 3240 times. Test the hypothesis that the die is unbiased. Use 0.01 level of significance. A sample of 100 iron bars is said to be drawn from a large number of bars whose length are normally distributed with mean 4 feet and S.D. of 0.6 feet. If the sample mean is 4.2 feet, can the sample be regarded as a truly random sample? Measuring specimens of nylon yarn, taken from two machines; it was found that 8 specimens from first machine had a mean denier of 9.67 with a S.D. of 1.81 while 10 specimens from second machine had a mean denier of 7.43 with a S.D. of 1.48. Assuming that the proportions are normal, test the hypothesis H0 : 1 - 2 = 1.5 against H1 : 1 - 2 > 1.5 at 0.05 level of significance. Ten participated in shooting competition in the first week. The efficiency expert of a computer company tested 40 engineers to estimate the average time it takes to assemble a certain computer component, getting a mean of 12.73 min. and S.D. of 2.06 min. If x = 12.73 is used as a point estimate of the actual average time required to perform the task, determine the maximum error with 99% confidence. Construct 98% confidence intervals for the true average time it takes to do the job. With what confidence can we assert that the sample mean does not differ from the true mean by more than 30 sec? Explain the procedure generally followed in the testing of hypothesis. A die tossed 256 times and it turns up with an even digit 150 times. Is the die unbiased? (Use = 0.05 as Level of significance.) A manufacturer claimed that at least 95% of the equipment which he supplied to a factory confirmed to specifications. An examination of a sample of 200 pieces of equipment revealed that 18 were faulty. Test his claim at 5% level of significance. The mean of two random samples of sizes 9 and 7 are 196.42 and 198.82 respectively. The sums of the squares of the deviations from the mean are 26.94 and 18.73 respectively. Can the sample be considered to have been drawn from the same normal population? The following figures show the distribution of digits in numbers chosen at random from a telephone directory. A fast food restaurant has one drive-in window. It is estimated that cars arrive according to a Poisson distribution at the rate of 2 every 5 min. and that there is enough space to accommodate a line of 10 cars. Other arriving cars can wait outside this space, if necessary. It takes 15 min. on the average to fill an order, but the service time actually varies according to an exponential distribution. Determine the following. (i) The probability that the facility is idle. (ii) The expected number of customers waiting to be served?
