Student-Friendly Standards I can name one group of explorers that came to North America. I know that European explorers had their own languages and cultures that were different from the Native Americans.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will tell students that the first settlers to America were explorers. Explain that explorers came from all around the world but we are going to look specifically at European explorers and settlers. 2. Ask students to name countries that would be considered European and write them on the white board. 3. Explain that explorers from all these countries traveled across the ocean to colonize in America. These explorers had their own culture and language just like the Native American tribes we learned about this week. 4. Ask students to fill out the top part of the worksheet independently. Instruct students to use the information they learned about to answer the question.

5. Class discussion about question #1. Tell students to add information they hear from peers that they find interesting. 6. Explain that we are going to be looking at only a few of the explorers that came to America: British, French, and Spanish. 7. Students will fill out the Venn diagram and the KWL chart on the worksheet independently. 8. CLOSURE: Teacher will tell students to hold on to the worksheet from today because we are going to continue learning about European colonization and culture tomorrow. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The completed worksheet will be used to measure understanding of the lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. This lesson introduces a lot of information. Day 4 will be more in depth with more information to review in order to measure student understanding. For this lesson I feel the concepts are minimal for the student to know. I will check the worksheet to ensure the student completed it correctly and followed directions. Ill check to see if the description written makes sense based on what the student has learned and if the charts have relevant information.
