Title of Unit: Learning My Way Around the World Title of Lesson: The Oceans Submitted By: Robyn Bolton

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 1st grade students to learn about the 5 oceans and where they are located on the map. This lesson will use a globe/class map and YouTube videos. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, pairs, individual assessment C. Materials: Paper Pencil Projector Globe/class map Worksheets

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms ocean and continent. Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to tell the difference between water and land on a map and globe.

E. Procedure: 1. Introduction: I will begin this lesson with a whole group discussion. I will ask students if they have ever been to the beach. I will point out to students that there is a difference between the sand and the water. The sand is the land and the water is the ocean. I will then tell students that there are 5 oceans in the world. I will ask students if they know what ocean is on our side of the world and if they can name any of the other oceans.

2. Students will then watch a video on YouTube about the 5 oceans and where they are located on the map. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCXBaON-ZxY. As we are watching the video on YouTube I will stop and have students come up to the class map and the globe and label where each ocean is locate.

3. Once students are done watching the video students will fill out the Continents and Oceans worksheet with a partner. They will only fill out the oceans since we have not learned about continents. 4. CLOSURE: Students will write in their journal and answer the questions: What is the difference between land and the ocean? What oceans are around where we live? F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the ticket out the door to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand the concepts of this lesson if they can tell the difference between land and ocean and if they can tell me what oceans are near where they live. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I dont think that this lesson will be that difficult to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part will be trying to connect land to continents since I will not teach students about continents until the next day. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will extend the lesson into the next day and students will learn about the continents and oceans together. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who do not grasp the concept I will answer all of their questions if they have any. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I might want to add more activities for students. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was finding material on the 5 oceans and finding activities for students to do on the five oceans.
