Match background
Manchester United FC will look to continue their climb up the Group C table by claiming a second victory against FC Oelul Galai. United got their first win of this campaign by beating the tournament newcomers 2-0 in Bucharest on matchday three, Wayne Rooney scoring both goals from the penalty spot. It was a result that lifted the Red Devils into second place and left Oelul rooted to the foot of the table and still seeking their first UEFA Champions League point. Match background After needing a late equaliser to salvage a point against FC Basel 1893 in their opening home fixture, United will look to get back to winning ways at Old Trafford against Oelul. Sir Alex Ferguson's men have a formidable home record in the UEFA Champions League, with just one defeat in their last 33 outings at Old Trafford dating back to 2005. Including UEFA Intertoto Cup ties and UEFA Cup qualifying rounds, Oelul have played 11 away matches in Europe and their record reads: W2 D2 L7. Their only previous visit to a European Cup-winning side brought a 5-0 defeat at Juventus in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup first round. While the two fixtures against United are Oelul's first encounters with a team from England, United have faced Romanian opposition once before, beating FC Dinamo Bucureti in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round in 2004/05. Ryan Giggs scored United's opening goal in a 2-1 first-leg win on 11 August 2004 at Bucharest's old National Stadium. Darren Fletcher also played and, unlike Giggs, also featured in the return at Old Trafford where Alan Smith (2) and David Bellion's goals secured a 3-1 victory. Team ties Oelul may have no prior experience against English sides but their coach Dorinel Munteanu enjoyed two high-profile successes against England in his long playing career with Romania. He scored in a 3-2 success against England at UEFA EURO 2000 a result that sent Romania into the quarter-finals at England's expense. Munteanu had earlier played in his country's 2-1 defeat of the English at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Munteanu played against Giggs in Romania's 5-1 defeat of Wales in a World Cup qualifier in May 1992. The pair met again when Romania prevailed 2-1 in the Cardiff return to qualify for the finals ahead of Wales. Oelul's coach scored two goals for 1. FC Kln in an 8-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC in a UEFA Intertoto Cup tie in July 1995. Sir Alex visited Romania with Aberdeen FC in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup second round, earning a 2-2 draw and with it a 5-2 aggregate win against the club now called FC 2005 SA Arges. Chris Smalling hit an 83rd-minute winner for England as they claimed a 2-1 home victory against a Romania side including Ionu Neagu and Cornel Rp in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off match in Norwich on 8 October 2010. Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck were also in the England team who earned a 0-0 draw in the second leg in Botosani, where Rp again featured and Neagu was an unused substitute. Dimitar Berbatov scored for Tottenham in a 3-1 home win against Dinamo Bucureti in the UEFA Cup group stage in December 2006. Sorin Frunz played for FC Unirea Urziceni in their home (0-1) and away (1-3) defeats by Liverpool FC in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32.

Match facts
Manchester United UEFA milestones None UEFA Champions League statistics United have committed 23 fouls, fewer than any other side in the group stage. Nemanja Vidi begins a two-game ban after his red card on matchday three. Michael Carrick's next booking will incur a suspension. Latest domestic information Saturday 29 October: Everton FC 0-1 Manchester United FC (Hernndez 19) De Gea; Jones, Vidi, Evans, Evra; Park, Fletcher, Cleverley (Nani 57), Welbeck (Valencia 73); Rooney; Hernndez (Berbatov 67) Jonny Evans returned from suspension as United claimed a third successive away win, though they were grateful to see a free-kick from the home side's Leighton Baines come back off the bar. United have scored in their last 21 games in all competitions. Manchester City FC inflicted United's heaviest Premier League defeat with a 6-1 derby success on 23 October. It was United's worst home reverse since a 5-0 loss against the same opponents in February 1955 and the first time they had conceded six or more goals at Old Trafford since going down 7-4 to Newcastle United FC on 13 September 1930. United won all but one of their Premier League home games in 2010/11 and had not lost at Old Trafford in all competitions since a 2-1 league defeat by Chelsea FC on 3 April 2010. Of the subsequent 37 matches, 33 ended in United victories. Wayne Rooney scored hat-tricks in consecutive league games, against Arsenal FC on 28 August and Bolton Wanderers FC on 10 September. He became the first player to score nine goals in the opening five games of the season in the Premier League era but has not found the net in the league since. United were 3-0 winners at fourth-tier side Aldershot Town FC in the League Cup fourth round on 25 October. They will play Crystal Palace FC in the quarter-finals in the week commencing 28 November. United scored 22 goals in their first six matches, matching Newcastle United FC's Premier League record established in 1994/95. United beat Manchester City 3-2 in the FA Community Shield on 7 August thanks to second-half goals from Chris Smalling (52) and Nani (58, 90+4). It was United's 19th win in the competition and 15th outright success. Injury news Tom Cleverley faced Aldershot on his return from a left foot injury that had kept him out since 10 September, but was withdrawn with an ankle problem shortly after half-time at Everton. On Saturday Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Smalling (foot fracture, out for a month) and Ashley Young (toe injury, two weeks) will sit out matchday four. Rafael (shoulder) and Darron Gibson (foot) have been sidelined since August. Ryan Giggs has not played since 15 October due to a hamstring problem. Miscellaneous Javier Hernndez has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2016. Vidi announced his retirement from international football following Serbia's failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2012. On 7 October, Phil Jones made his senior international debut at right-back as England drew 2-2 in Montenegro to qualify for UEFA EURO 2012. Young opened the scoring; Rooney was sent off with 16 minutes left. Fabio made his Brazil debut the same day, in a 1-0 friendly win against Costa Rica; his match ended early in the second half due to injury. Nani's Portugal face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA EURO 2012 play-offs on 11 and 15 November.

Friday's win left Oelul on 18 points from 12 games in the Romanian top flight this season; this time last term they were top of the table on 28. Gabriel Paraschiv scored the winner against Trgu Mure on 22 October and was on target again three days later as Oelul repeated their 2-1 victory against the same opponents, this time in last 16 of the Romanian Cup in Galati. Liviu Antal scored the winner on 87 minutes his first of the season moments after missing a penalty. There was still time for Ionu Neagu to be sent off, ruling him out on Friday. It is the first time Oelul have reached the Romanian Cup quarter-finals since 2006/07. Oelul have mustered just four wins in ten home matches this season, and three in seven on their travels. The Galati outfit have lost six of their last 13 games in all competitions. Dorinel Munteanu's side have been restricted to 18 goals in 18 outings in all competitions this season. Injury news Defensive midfielder Ioan Filip injured his right leg in training on 21 October, returning on Friday. Adrian Slgeanu sat out last week's Romanian Cup tie with a knee problem. Bu has not featured since 2 October because of a left ankle problem. Miscellaneous Sponsored by the club, Oelul fan Tiberiu Pintilie last week scaled the sixth highest mountain in the world, the 8,201m Cho Oyu in the Himalayas, before unfurling the Romanian champions' flag.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders FC Barcelona are bidding to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six. Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real Madrid. Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including MK ilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Koice (1997/98). Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. MK ilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvrosi TC in 1995/96. No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on matchday three of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
