Ana Martinez Grade 3 Topic: Geometry Subject: Math Objective: Students will be able to describe, classify and categorize

shapes and explain why it is a quadrilateral. Materials: Graphing paper, math notebook, pencils, and image worksheet. Introduction: Today, we will be discussing quadrilaterals. Does anybody know what that is? Call on someone that has his or her hand raised. Either correct or not. A quadrilateral just means a shape with four sides. The shape has to be straight and it has to be 2 dimensional (meaning it has to lay flat) Not only does it have four sides, it has four corners. Knowing this, lets look at some shapes and determine whether it is a quadrilateral or not.

Thumbs up for yes. Thumbs down for no. Point at each one and look around to see of they have and understanding of what a quadrilateral is. Good, does anybody have any questions? Answer any questions they may have. Before we start I want the class to think about these questions. Is a square a rectangle? Which shapes can be considered to be parralleograms? We will discuss different types of shapes that are considered to be a quadrilateral. ( I will have already drawn out the shapes on the board) As I describe each shape I will color code each characteristic and draw it as I go in order for the students to visually see

1. Square

It has four right angels (label them) It has all equal sides

2. Rectangle

Have four right angels Show opposite equal sides

3. Rhombus

All sides are equal in length Opposite sides are parallel Opposite angels are equal meaning that the angels across from each other are equal (point to each angel and its corresponding angel) Lets think, what is the difference between a square and a rhombus.

4. Parallelogram

Now that we have talked about the types of quadrilaterals, use tangrams to make quadrilaterals for

Opposite sides are parallel and are equal in length Opposite angels are the same

5. Trapezoid

One pair of opposite sides is parallel.

Now that we have gone over the characteristics of each shape, lets look at our questions from before. Is a square a type of rectangle? I ask and call someone who may know and explain why. Which of these shapes can be considered a parallelogram? Ask and call on someone that may know and explain why Ask a question that I havent asked, Why isnt a trapezoid a parallelogram?

I will have a chart drawn on the board.

Each will have an arrow connect to one another.

From quadrilateral to trapezoid from there to parallelogram and from there draw two separate arrows one from rhombus and one to rectangle and they both will have arrows pointing to a square.

There are complex quadrilaterals where two sides cross over.

Assignments: Once you go back to your desl, take graph paper and draw the shapes like I did on the board, like a tree diagram. Once you are done come to me to check you notebook and then you will be given a picture. You will be required to find objects within the picture that are quadrilaterals. Once you find the object and write the name of it in the correct column. Once you are done hand it in. Worksheet:

Name: Square Rectangle Rhombus Parallelogram Trapezoid
