Parts of Beam Deflection Apparatus

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Horizontal Rods Vertical Rods Base Rod Grips Bolts Nuts

All of these parts are designed in Pro E, and then assembled to form an assembly i.e. Beam Deflection Apparatus The dimensions, process of designing and assembly of these parts is given as following.

1. Horizontal Rods:
The horizontal rods are the main parts of the assembly. They are made up of steel. The dimensions of the horizontal bars are given as following. a) Diameter = 0.436 in b) Length = 30.5 in The different properties of horizontal rod are: Volume = 4.5536820 in3 Surface Area = 4.2075501e+01 in2 Density = 8.7888000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 4.0021400e-02 slug

The single step to make the rod is to extrude the circle to the given length as shown in figure.

The horizontal rod in its final form is as under:

2. Vertical Rods:
The vertical rods are the main parts of the assembly. They are made up of steel. The dimensions of the vertical bars are given as following. a) Diameter = 0.4776 in b) Length = 27.7 in The different properties of vertical rod are: Volume = 4.9624745 in3 Surface area = 4.1920064e+01 in2 Density = 8.7888000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 4.3614196e-02 slug The single step to make the rod is to extrude the circle to the given length as shown in figure.

The vertical rod in its final form is as under:

3. Base:
There are two bases of this apparatus. They are made up of cast iron and they have holes in which the rods and bolts are inserted. The dimensions of the base are given as under: a) Length = 9.41 in b) Height = 4.10 in c) Depth = 1.8 in The different properties of the base are as under: Volume = 4.1327692e+01 in3 Surface area = 9.9986630e+01 in2 Density = 8.3856000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 3.4655749e-01 slug

The first step to make the base is to sketch the cross section of it as shown in figure.

Now extrude this sketch to the given depth.

Now chamfer all the edges and corners.

Then insert the hole on one side of the base and then mirror it on the other side.

And then mirror it on the other side.

Now make the holes for horizontal and vertical rods.

Make another hole for the bolt.

And then mirror it.

The base in its final form is as under:

4. Rod Grips:
The grips are used to hold the rods in place and to make their contacts. They are made up of cast iron and they are also coated with blue colour. The dimensions of this part are as following. a) Length = 0.81 in b) Height = 1.25 in c) Depth = 0.81 in The different properties of this part are given as under: Volume = 5.9675124e-01 in3 Surface Area = 7.4979425 in2 Density = 8.3856000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 5.0041172e-03 slug

Extrude a square cross section to the given height to make the block as shown below.

Now insert the hole by extruding a circle according to the dimensions of the bolt inserted.

Now make the second hole.

Now make a cut in the block by extrusion and remove material.

The grip in its final form is as under.

5. Bolts:
There are two types of bolts used in it. We will explain them separately

Simple bolt:
This bolt is used to hold the rod tight in the base. It is made up of steel. The dimensions of this bolt are given below. a) Hexagonal head diagonal = 0.5625 in b) Length after head = 1in c) Diameter 0.29 d) Pitch = 0.02 e) Section is equilateral triangle with base 0.02 and height 0.02 The different properties of this part are as under. Volume = 9.2066503e-02 in3 Surface area = 2.3919905 in2 Density = 8.7888000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 8.0915409e-04 slug To make this bolt, first sketch a hexagon and then extrude it to make the head of the bolt.

Then extrude the length of the bolt.

Now make threading on the bolt using helical sweep.

The bolt in its final shape is as in figure below.

Flange bolt:
This bolt is used to tight the grips to hold the rods. They are made up of steel and a flange nut is also used along with this bolt. The dimensions of this bolt are given in fig below.

The different properties of this bolt are as under: Volume = 2.2580501e-01 in3 Surface area = 6.3845097 in2 Density = 8.7888000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 1.9845551e-03 slug

First step is to extrude the circle to make the head of the bolt.

Now draw a line as shown in figure below.

And revolve it to remove the material as shown in figure.

Then use extrusion to make the length of the bolt.

Now extrude the flange on the head of the bolt

Then round the edges

Make another flange on the other side

Make the threading on the length. The final form of bolt is as shown in figure below.

6. Nuts:
The only nut used is the flange nut. It is made up of steel. Its dimensions are given below in figures

The different properties of this nut are as following. Volume = 2.1704668e-02 in3 Surface area = 1.1365272 in2 Density = 8.7888000e-03 slug / in3 Mass = 1.9075799e-04 slug First extrude the circle.

Round the edge as shown in figure

Revolve the line at 75 degrees angle with vertical to make this taper.

Make a hole using the extrusion

Now make the flanges using the same procedure as for the bolt.

Now make the threads on the internal surface like the one made on the outer surface of bolt.

The complete part is as in figure given below.

Also make washer to be fitted with bolts.

Assembling the Parts of Apparatus

To start assembling the parts of the apparatus, open a new file, assembly. Import the base of the apparatus. Set the location of base as default.

Accept the settings of this part and select the green check mark. Now import the second part i.e. the horizontal bar. Select the cylinder constraints set and join the axis of horizontal bar and the base hole made for inserting this bar.

Now select the translation axis and select the end of horizontal rod and the front surface of base. Enter the current position as 0.00.

Click on the green check mark to accept the assembled part. Now import the vertical rod and assemble it too.

Now import the base second time and assemble in the same manner as the previous parts are assembled.

Click on the green check mark to accept the assembled part. Now import the vertical bar again and assemble in the same manner as the previous parts are assembled.

Then import the grip and adjust it at the top of the vertical rod as shown in figure

Again import the grip and adjust it as shown in figure below.

Also import the horizontal bar and adjust it.

In the same way insert two grips on other vertical top rod also.

Import the flange bolts and insert them to join the grips.

Now fit the nut on the other side of flange bolt.

Do the same for other set of grips.

Insert the bolts in the bases.

Place the washers at both sides of each flange bolt.

The final, complete assembly is as shown below.
