GISC9305 - Assignment 1
Due February 7, 2013

Executive Summary
Both program and operational standards create an independent basis for individual companies. It allows for ease of understanding when reading a map or drawing, and minimal confuision when looking for files, metadata or reading the scale/coordinate system. Much consideration must go in to creating such standards as it will be the basis for all drawings created or how an employee is to preform a certain task. GeoTech has created a Drawing/Data Standards document for the creation of drawings in AutoCAD 3D 2012. Through the use of class resources, the document was created for the student companies and reflect the structure of how profesional businesses write their individual Data Standards. The output file GISC9305D1BachnerA.dwg is what the basis for GeoTechs Data/Drawing standards come from.

Introduction

Program and operational standards create an independent basis for individual companies, or regional areas for example. It allows for ease of understanding when reading a map or drawing, and minimal confuision when looking for files, metadata or reading the scale/coordinate system. Much consideration must go in to creating such standards as it will be the basis for all drawings created or how an employee is to preform a certain task.

Purpose

The purpose for this assignment is to better understand the fun ctions of AutoDesks AutoCAD 3D suite. This is done through the manipulation of image data, creation of object classes and then producing Drawing Standards document for GeoTech. The following pages of this report contain the Standards that were created based off the Assign 1 9305.dwg file provided in the GISC9305 folder on the X:/ drive. Figure 1 is an image of the area that the Drawing/Data Standards was based off of.

Data Standards for GeoTech

3.1 Software The use of Autodesks AutoCAD Map 3D 2012 is the singular platform in which drawings are created for GeoTech. The following standards are for a basic 2D model, but have been created to be as version neutral as possible. The company has multiple licencing of this program and all drafting personnel have access to the program and clearance to use the extensions. It is expected that Drafting personnel produce drawings that follow the standards as defined in this document for AutoCAD Map 3D 2012. 3.2 File Naming Convention The naming convention for all AutoCAD drawings shall follow that of the standard GeoTech file naming convention. The first 4 characters represent the client name followed by the 4 digit code represents GeoTechs job number sequence. This is followed by the job number for the client; D###. Finally the drafting personnel that have worked on the specific job, adds their last name and first initial for company records. Each drawing should be named after this outline: GISC9305D#LastNameFirstInitial. 3.3 Spatial References / Coordinate System In accordance to the nature and range of clientele of GeoTech, there are numerous geographical areas that currently, and in the future have works being done for. The standard for all drawings being the real 7-degree and 6-degree, Northing and Easting respectively, UTM coordinates. If a clients informational data is sent to GeoTech in Decimal Degrees or Degrees Minutes Seconds format then the file is given to the GIS Technician department to change the projection. For a North American project, the Standard Datum shall be NAD 83. The Drafting personnel can then select the zone that the clients data is located in.

3.9 Quality Assurance and Control Procedures All drawings created within the GeoTech Company shall adhere to the drawing standards of this document. All drawings shall be subject to quality assurance checks in order to ensure the adherence of these standards and so that the company produces quality drawings for clients. These checks will examine: Digital file standards (i.e. format, naming, organization) Data standards - (i.e. referencing, accuracy, symbology, attributes) Output standards - (i.e. layering, text/annotation, layout, plotting) The AutoCAD 3D software includes a check standards command as shown in Figure 5. It is used to verify a drawing adherence to a set Standard to ensure uniformity throughout the drawing. This uses an existing drawing template that has been created to the exact Standards code for GeoTech. The file is used to verify the properties set for layers, dimension styles, linetypes and text styles. If inconsistencies are found within the drawing being checked, they are flagged and a report is generated. The company has licensed copies of the software, which is required to run this command.

Figure 5: Checking Standards

Once the drawing is competed and has gone through the control procedures, there are final checks to be performed before the work is sent to the client. File Format Standards CAD drawings in .dwg (AutoCAD native) format as specified in contract deliverables GIS data in .shp format, map layouts in native format which they were prepared and PDF. Contract specifications and data files (if applicable) to be delivered uncompressed. Metadata Metadata (as per 3.7) is required for the following deliverables: Drawings Spatial datasets (e.g. shape files)

Findings and Conclusions

Drafting personnel must place the drawing in the GeoTech Company standard map outline for printing, and ensure that all of their personal and informational data is included before being sent off to the Drafting Supervisor for approval. When the drawing is approved for calculations and accuracy, the Drafting personnel must summarize their notes, findings and comments about the drawing, and deliver to the Drafting Supervisor. These notes are placed into a report that will accompany the drawing to the client. Once the job is completed and monies have been received for the work, the job is closed and archived for future reference. The Naming convention follows on from the last job that was done for the client.

4.0

Conclusion

It is apparent that great detail is required to create a Standard for a company to use and implement to ensure that there is a level of quality and consistency with their data that is produced. The AutoCAD 3D 2012 program has many features to help businesses ensure these standards are kept and is a major asset to the program. The use of creating Object classes allows for the assignment of different attributes to a group of lines or points that have already been created. This achieves greater detail in the drawings and more information about the area.
