While reading the story, point out the vocabulary words that are associated with recycling. Either before or after the story, engage children in conversation about recycling and the importance of recycling, reusing, and reducing to reinforce vocabulary words. o Six Early Literacy Skills Connection Print Motivation: Model excitement/enthusiasm for books and reading. Vocabulary: Point out and explain vocabulary words associated with recycling. Make sure to use these words in conversations and in play with kids to reinforce their meaning. Narrative: Engage children in conversations about the importance of recycling before and/or after the story. This will model good conversational and listening skills. Print Awareness: Model for children book knowledge by Thinking Aloud and showing reading conventions such as; left to right page turning, front cover identification and print identification. Model Activities Explain to the families that we will be focusing our activities on using recycling and reusing. We will be creating airplanes by reusing empty toilet paper tubes, identifying and sorting materials that are recyclable in the city of Milwaukee, and create an I Can Recycle book.

Show children the items they will use to do the activities. Discuss how these items will be used. Make sure to use the vocabulary Model the process of working: each activity. Explain that children will move from station to station. Model the process of creating the airplane Show children how to color the tube with markers, attach the construction paper wings and fold the construction paper to create the tail of the plane. Model the how to sort the different recyclable materials. Show pictures of the types of items that can be recycled. Model the process of making the "I Can Recycle" book. Fold each page into fourths and then staple the two folded sheets together along the middle Show the children how to write their request in the blank on each page. Collect small pictures (from magazines, coupons, newspapers) or small samples (pieces of cardboard or newspaper) of recyclable items. Demonstrate how to find and cut out pictures from magazines, coupons, and newspapers and glue them on to the pages of the book. Then explain to the children that they can read their books to their grown-ups or friends. Six Early Literacy Skills Connection: Print Awareness: Making the book will help children identify the functions of books, ie., directionality, letters make meaning, and pictures can help tell the story.

Families engage in activities: Have families decide which activities they'd like to begin with ( I Can Recycle" book, airplane, or recycling sort. Children can rotate to as many activities as they like. o Six Early Literacy Skills Connection: Letter Knowledge: Having children write down what they can recycle in their " I Can Recycle" books will help children see and lean the different letters of the alphabet. Children can also learn the difference between uppercase and lower case. Interact with families modeling and discussing skills/behaviors. Walk around to assist families and ask children questions about what they are doing. Continue to use vocabulary words. Briefly discuss with parents the six early literacy skills that are being addressed during the play literacy session Model activities if needed Encourage children to explore all the activities but accept that some will prefer one activity over the others. o Six Early Literacy Skill Connection: o Narrative Skills: Asking children questions about what they are doing engages them in conversation and helps them develop listening skills.

Closing Activity: Ask parents to help their children put away the toys. Take the time to review vocabulary. Additional Story: If time permits, read an additional story, such as The EARTH Book by Todd Parr Goodbye Song Helpful Hints: Have materials set up on the table while you do the story time on the carpet. If materials prove to be too much of a distraction for the kids, put a blanket over the toys until you're ready to use them. Encourage children to choose which area they'd like to work in, but also encourage them to explore other areas as well. You can close an area if it gets too crowded . If this happens, make sure you have a time so each child gets an equal chance to explore that area.
