North American Geography and People

Author: Brittney Johnson Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): Tuesday April 23rd Overall Goal for the Lesson: The overall goal is to give the students a general, overall understanding of how geography affects people of North America in terms of push/pull factors, migration patterns, and population density. A Secondary goal is to introduce students to the migrations of people to North America in the 20th Century such as Southeast Asians, Mexicans, and peoples of the Caribbean. Description of classroom, grade level, and students: The Class is a 6th grade geography class with the average number of students. Some students have minor LDs.

Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Given an introductory iMovie and a Nearpod presentation with a quiz, the students will be able to explain and discuss push and pull factors of migration with 90% accuracy on the quiz. Given an introductory iMovie and a Nearpod presentation with a quiz, the students will be able to evaluate the causes and effects of the 20th century migrations of people to the North American Continent with 80% accuracy on the quiz. Given an introductory iMovie and a Nearpod presentation with a quiz, the students will be able to analyze the effects of population densities and people settlement trends with 90% accuracy on the quiz. Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). The nearpod presentation along with the assessment quiz will take approximately 25 minutes Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) The Unit will be introduced through the iMovie trailer.

After the other lessons have been taught, the class will move to the nearpod lecture. The students will use either their smartphones or their iPads to access the lecture and the quiz. The teacher will facilitate and lead the lecture, along with in-lecture activities and the quiz. When the lecture is complete, the nearpod will move straight into an assessment quiz with live feedback given to the instructor.

Analyze the impact of geography on population location, growth, and change, applying geographic concepts of population density, the availability of resources, settlement patterns, and migrational push and pull factors including the twentieth century Asian and Caribbean refugee migration to North America or the pattern of Hispanic workers migrating to the United States

Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). The activity will be assessed within the presentation in two ones. There will be polls and activities within the lesson to check for understanding. If students do not do well, the teacher can easily go

back to the material and cover it in more detail. At the end of the presentation, there will be a quiz to test for comprehension. Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs? Students can use all the accessibility tools on the iPad. If theye need a partner they are welcome to use one. If they need a print out of the slides it can be provided.
