BTEC National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering ( year 2 ) Unit 28: Further Mathematics for technicians Summative Assessment Assignment

2 Algebraic Techniques

In your work as a mechanical technician, you may have to deal with many different types of calculations that may include algebraic techniques. As a part of your course you are required to prove your abilities to do such calculations and this could be done through solving the following tasks. Task 1: [ Pass P 2 ]

An oil company is to drill a bore hole 20 meters deep. Calculate the cost of drilling if the cost $60 for drilling the first two meters with an increase in cost of $10 per two meters of each succeeding two meters.

Task 2:

[ Pass P3 ]

A drilling machine is to have 10 speeds ranging from 200 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) to 1200 RPM. If the speeds form a geometric progression, determine the values of these speeds, each correct to the nearest whole number.

Task 3:

[ Pass P4 ]

Suppose that:
V a jb I c jd

(voltage phasor) (current phasor)

we wish to find : 1. Z
V I

(Ohms law for complex impedance)

2. P VI

(complex power)

Use both Cartesian and Polar forms to find the answer for both (1) and (2)

Each group should choose one column of values

a b c d

1 1 1 1

1 1 2 2

2 2 2 2

Task 4:

[ Pass P5 ]

The Hardness of ten steel samples was measured and the results were as follows:: sample Hardness 1 90 2 92 3 95 4 91 5 98 6 102 7 97 8 92 9 95 10 99 Calculate the Mean, Variance and Standard Deviation.
Task 5: [ Pass P6 ]

The accuracy of 100 mechanical instruments was measured as a percentage and the results were grouped into bands of 1% as shown. Calculate the Mean, Variance and Standard Deviation.

Task 6:

[ Merit M2 ]

In the schematic diagram, we show a parallel circuit containing an ideal inductance and an ideal capacitance connected in parallel with an ideal signal voltage source. The values necessary for calculations are:
V AC 10V .rms

Frequency f 1MHz Angular frequency 2f Inductance L 150H 150.micro.Henry Capacitance C 220 pf 220. pico. farad 1. Calculate the equivalent parallel impedance of the system, Z // in the following complex numbers forms: a. Cartesian form; b. Polar form. 2. Calculate the resonance frequency, f r 2 r which occurs when :
