APRIL GARDENING IDEAS By: Lyn Chimera, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Buds are starting to pop, plants are greening and bulbs are blooming. Its astounding to see how much has grown in the last week. Spring has finally arrived. Soon everything will really start to grow. If youre anything like me and havent gotten much done in the garden because of all the cold wet weather, this is the time to list your priorities. Each garden has different needs, but the following are some reminders; -Leaves and debris should be removed from beds so the plants coming up can grow unimpeded. Be careful, as the young shoots can be easily damaged as you rake up the leaves. You may find the shoots are tall and pale green to yellow. That is because they have been buried under the leaves and havent gotten enough sun. They should green up after being exposed to the light. -Any remaining ornamental grasses should be cut back before the new shoots start to grow. Tying a large clump of grass with twine or even tape can hold it together while you prune the clump back. If its a very large clump you can even use a chain saw to cut them! -Perennials already growing in your garden can be transplanted and divided as soon as their crowns start to show and your soil is ready. -It may still be too soon to plant newly purchased plants. Remember they are coming from greenhouses and are not used to our fluctuating temperatures. Also the soil may be too wet and cold for quite a while depending on the weather. -This is a perfect time to weed. Removing weeds now prevents a lot of work later when they are larger with more established roots. -I cant stress enough how important it is NOT to step in your beds while the soil is so soft. Not only does it compact the soil but you have a good chance of crushing perennial crowns you cant see yet. -It may be late spring on the calendar, but its early spring in the garden. Spring may be here, but remember to relax and dont do too much too soon. fb

your wedding, including behind-the-scenes footage. Although you may have to pay less for their services, amateurs usually do not have the proper equipment, and therefore, may need to be closer to the action. McFall placed first in the senior division, with John Cradduck second, Emily Dibble third, Ashley Wian fourth, and Shelby Baldwin fifth. Following the contest, the youth enjoyed a variety of demonstrations. Natalie Aiello, Extension Educator for Elk and Cameron Counties, showed a collection of macroinvertebrates. Heather McKean and Sherry Dumire, from the McKean County Conservation District, provided activities about recycling and gave each participant a Canadian hemlock. Ashley Larson from the McKean County Dairy Club brought a calf along for an introduction to the dairy industry as well as an invitation to join the club. Don Comes, renowned horticulturalist and 4-H benefactor, led a gardening station where each participant planted flower seeds to take home. Finally, the McKean Teen Leadership Club provided a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy- plaster animal tracks, picture frames, cupcake decorating, hiking, and habitat golf. The public was invited to this event to explore what 4-H has to offer. Newcomers as well as current members enjoyed a beautiful day at Kinzua Bridge State Park. GAME AND FISHERIES COMMITTEE ADOPTS MEASURES TO CHANGE TERMS OF GAME, FISH-BOAT COMMISSIONERS Harrisburg- The House Game and Fisheries Committee approved four bills today, including two that impact the terms of service for board members of the Game Commission and the Fish and Boat Commission. House Bill 828 and House Bill 798 would reduce the length of the terms of service for board members of the Game Commission and the Fish and Boat Commission from eight years to four years. It also would allow them to serve multiple terms with appointment by the governor and approval of the Senate. Under current law, the term of office for commissioners of both agencies is eight years. A commissioner may serve up to an additional six months when a replacement has not been appointed by the governor and approved by the Senate. A member who fills a vacancy of less than four years is eligible for reappointment to a full term. A member who serves a full eight-year term, or fills a vacancy for more than four years, is not eligible for reappointment for a period of eight years. House Bills 798 and 828 remove these specific limitations on service, allowing for multiple four-year terms of continuous service. Vacancies may still be filled for partial terms. The committee also approved the following bills: House Bill 891 will allow properly permitted Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators to check traps remotely by electronic means. Senate Bill 623 aims to encourage more participation in hunting by allowing the Game Commission to offer mentored hunting programs to people of various ages, rather than only youths under age 12. The bill was amended in committee to specify that a mentored hunter may only participate in the program for up to three licensing seasons. If the person wishes to continue hunting after that time, he or she would have to obtain a hunting license.
