Motivation Letter

1. What is your motivation to do a PhD in areas of computational sciences applied to the Energy sector?

Energy sector is a high risk sector. Precise engineering is required for these kinds of hazardous industries. Computation is the backbone of the engineering. In our engineering course curricular we have studied different computation and stimulation techniques. So, PhD in energy sector gives a good opportunity to apply the knowledge of computation in a field of engineering.
2. How will your past experience (academic curriculum, research background, knowledge of specific computational methods) help in this PhD programme? Any other aspects you would like to highlight in this regard?

In my M.Tech course curriculum I have studied Finite Element Method, Soil-structure interaction, Mechanics of deformable media, Vibration, Seismology, and Earthquake Resistance Design of structures. All of the above mention courses are related to the computational science. My M.Tech project is Seismic response analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation system. In this project FEM techniques are used to model the dam body, foundation and impounded water. Acoustic coupling is the most challenging task in this project. De-convolution of ground motion is also done to get the proper accelerogram at the base of the system. In my M.Tech dissertation Nonlinear Seismic analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation system in three dimensional space have to be performed.
3. Given an option to write a thesis proposal in the area of computational sciences, do you have an idea which you can briefly explain? What is your motivation behind the idea?

In case of offshore structure like platform for petroleum extraction sea can be modeled in finite element method. The modeling of sea helps to estimate the forces, damping, energy loss due to the different phenomena like wave propagation, earthquake, tsunami etc. Study of Petroleum extraction platform using FEM for earthquake, blast, wave, tsunami loading considering its ageing effect
4. What were you most excited about in your Master's research project? (could be an experimental result, a theoretical breakthrough etc)

The most exciting part of my masters project is the modeling of impounded reservoir water and the generation of hydrodynamic pressure within the reservoir. The project is mainly on theoretical background. The required data are supplied by my M.Tech guide.

5. Why would you want to study in Netherland? Research on computational field in Netherland is top class. Due to geographical reason Dutch are specialized in water retaining structure like dam. There delta work for flood prevention is considered as a wonder of the modern world by American Society of Civil Engineers. I also work on dam. So, it will give me a good opportunity to flourish myself on this field. I know two European language English and Deutsche. 6. Why do you want to work for Shell in India? Shell is one of the renowned companies. In the field of energy Shell shows its excellence. So, it always good start career in a company like Shell.
7. Where do you see yourself in 8-10 years from now?

Dreams are not static in ever changing world. Although after 8-10 years I want to see myself as a scientist or a professor in a reputed collage or organization, in the field of Civil Engineering.
