Bird Friendly Coffee Site Visit Report

Date : 1 -2 September 2012 Time: 6 hours drive to Begnas and half an hour drive rough road to Sundaridanda Site Location: Begnas VDC, Lekhnath, Pokhara, Kaski (200 Km west from TOV Office Bakhundole)

The Location is very beautiful with the scineries and biodiversity. Community forest are located two sides of the hill and both side has a beautiful Lakes. The snowcapped mountains are in the northern part of the forest Total Area : about 80 hector Team Composition: 1. Samir Newa Community Mobilisation Expert 2. Jebin Shrestha Business development Expert 3. P.K Lama Coffee Production Local Expert Major Activates: 1. Visiting existing Coffee Garden: a. A wise Farmer Mr. Surya Adhikari have coffee plantation since 10 years . The coffee plants are healthy and productive. 2. Meeting with FUG members. a. Clarified about the BF Project Concept. b. Clarified how FUG will function and their work scopes BF Project Nepal is targeted to provide benefit for the low income habitants. Its major objective is to protect the forest ecology as well providing income from the using of forest resources. But not to convert protected forest into Agro Forestry system. Bird friendly Coffee Production is control by the Certification system.

The forest is belong to the Nepal Government but it handed over to the Community Forest Users Group to Protect and Use modality. FUG have their own rules and regulation, it is guided by FUGs Work Plan. This plan is approved by District Forest Office. Pachbhaiya Community Forest User Group and simkauli Swar Siran Danda Community Forest Users Group have also mentioned the agro forestry system in their forest FUG Work Plan to increase the income level of its member. The Pachabhaiya FUG have been plantated a coffee in their forest for the trail basis. The members have keen interest to use forest resources for income generation program without hampering the forest ecology. The community Forest is not allow to provide the Forest as collateral, lease, rental or partially use by non members. But the FUG member can join the partnership approach to develop a income generation program by using the Forest. Currently FUG getting benefit through shrub cutting and management practice
