Instructional Technology Team, College of Engineering, Virginia Tech The Mathematics Add-In from Microsoft allows you to write, insert, edit, solve and graph mathematical equations directly in OneNote and Word. It can make writing mathematically intensive papers significantly easier while supplying professional graphics to assist explanations.

Get the Program

Download the Mathematics Add-In from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/ Note: Make sure youre using Microsoft Office 2010. Type OneNote add-in in the search box at the top of the window and click

Inserting an equation
In Word, select either the Insert tab or the Mathematics tab and click equation. An equation box should appear where you can type your equation, with special characters available in the ribbon. In OneNote, there are a couple different options for inserting equations. The first is to click the Mathematics tab, click Equation, which will insert an equation box similar to the one produced in Word. Here you can either type your equation as in word or you can click the Ink Equation button which is now next to the equation button in the ribbon.

This will open a window that looks like the Tablet Input panel, here you can hand write your equation and it will be converted to text. Then click Insert to place the equation on your OneNote page.

If you are working with equations that involve complex numbers or working Trigonometric equations you can set you preferences under the mathematics tab. 3

Computing
Now that you have an equation, you can compute the solution to it. 1. Highlight your equation 2. Click the compute button located to the left under the mathematics tab and to the right under the design tab. A menu will drop down from which you should select the appropriate calculation method.

3. The solution will be displayed directly below the equation and can be copied and pasted anywhere.

Graphing
Equations can also be graphed. 1. The equation must be set equal to a variable; 2D graphs should be equal to y, 3D graphs should be equal to z 2. Highlight your equation 3. Click the graph button located to the left under the mathematics tab and to the right under the design tab. A menu will drop down from which you should select the appropriate graphing method.

4. A window showing the graph of the equation will open. In this window you can manipulate the graph by clicking and dragging and/or by using the tools on the left side.

5. Click the insert button to place the graph onto the OneNote page directly under you equation. 6. To edit the graph, highlight it, click the graph button and click edit graph. The editing window will reopen with an update button now at the bottom, which will update the current graph or you can reinsert it if you prefer and it will place a new graph below the original.

Points of note
When computing an equation, if you put a variable equal to the formula you will get an exact answer out (no decimals). In order to have a decimal answer remove the variable and click compute under the compute menu. Once a graph has been inserted onto a page it can no longer be edited. If you want to change it you have to re-graph the equation and edit it in the graph window and then reinsert it.
