smsExpress First Delivery Attempt

Peak timeframes of call volume, such as early morning weather reports, require rapid delivery and intelligent routing to alleviate network congestion.

Leader in Short Message Service

Dramatic increases in Short Message Service (SMS) challenge carriers to expand the capacity of their existing Signaling System 7 (SS7) network infrastructure in order to support bursts of high-volume SMS messaging, alleviate network congestion, minimize lost messages, and conduct accurate billing all while managing operational costs. TeleCommunication Systems, Inc.s (TCS) smsExpress First Delivery Attempt (FDA) solution provides a suite of applications enabling premium SMS service, while generating incremental ARPU (average revenue per user/ unit). With more than 10 years of proven SMS performance TCS messaging products powered nearly One Trillion messages in 2010.

Call Volume

Carriers are making investments in additional capacity to accommodate daily spikes, yet creating unnecessary, excessive capacity during normal timeframes.

The TCS Solution

TCS smsExpress FDA eliminates traditional store/forward delivery. This alternative approach to SMS delivery transmits approximately 80% - 90% (depending upon operator network characteristics) of text messages directly to mobile users without first routing the messages to the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) for traditional store/ forward delivery. Only text messages that fail first delivery attempt are routed to the SMSC. Using smsExpress FDA, carriers successfully offload short message traffic from legacy SMSCs that may be nearing end-of-life renewal cycles. The smsExpress solution is most often deployed in a side-by-side fashion with an existing big-iron SMSC platform. smsExpress has a proven track record for compatibility with most SMSC vendors, and eliminates the need for forklift upgrades typically associated with end-of-life hardware.

smsExpress features SMS delivery via IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS). Dual mode handsets capable of registering on either the SS7 or the IMS networks are supported. The SMSC continues to act as a robust high performance, high availability store/forward SMS delivery engine. These approaches are depicted below.

Key Features
Delivery Performance engineered to withstand high volume traffic bursts commonly associated with interactive TV, marketing promotions or mass alerts. Billing Sophisticated system and billing techniques for SMSCs, prepaid, and voice mail thereby avoiding leakage. Intelligent Routing flexible, configurable routing rules for retry and message escalation. Scalable Platform Capacity relief to handle peaks. Easily upgrades to full SMSC leveraging TCS simplified conversion. Geographically Redundant Shares load and provides 99.999% reliability. Cost Relief smsExpress FDA is less expensive than typical SMSC upgrade. Cost savings on existing SMSCs are realized due to the percentage of legacy traffic that is off-loaded. Embedded promotions Enabling premium services allows the carrier to increase ARPU.

Anytime, Anyplace Interpersonal Communication

The TCS smsExpress solution suite offers alternative approaches to SMS delivery. The TCS smsExpress application provides carriers with FDA intelligent routing options, as well as store/forward operation. Using the FDA option, carriers are able to off-load short message traffic from existing SMSCs. In this configuration, the FDA SMSC attempts the first delivery for all messages routed through the system. Any messages that fail delivery are routed to the existing SMSC for retry.
