Sentence: The Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor and release to the captives. Luke 4.18 THE COLLECT Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Prayer after Communion Gracious God, our hands have taken holy things; our lives have been nourished by the body of your Son. May we who have eaten at this holy table be strengthened for service in your world for Jesus sake.

FIRST READING

Jeremiah 1.4-10

A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah The word of the Lord came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Alas, Sovereign Lord , I said, I do not know how to speak; I am too young. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am too young. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you, declares the Lord . Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 71.1-6 Response: You, O Lord, are my confidence and hope. In you, O Lord, do I seek refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; incline your ear to me and save me.............................R Be for me a stronghold to which I may ever resort; send out to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the evildoer and the oppressor............R

For you are my hope, O Lord God, my confidence, even from my youth. Upon you have I leaned from my birth, when you drew me from my mother's womb; my praise shall be always of you......................................R SECOND READING
If

1 Corinthians 13.1-13

A reading from Pauls first letter to the Corinthians I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! You shall go to all to | whom I send you. Do not be afraid, for | I am with you. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 4.21-30

Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Josephs son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophets home town. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection on the Readings

The two major themes in this weeks reading stand out in clear relief: Firstly, Gods grace is not always a comfortable and gentle thing to experience. Integral to Gods grace is the work of justice which distresses the comfortable and self-assured (the "no") even as it comforts the distressed (the "yes"). Jeremiah is told that his message will not only build up but break down; the psalmist reflects on his vulnerability and the threat of evil in spite of his long life of relationship with God; the love that Paul speaks about is not an easy or comfortable way to follow, but challenges our self-centeredness and apathy; and finally, Jesus makes it clear that his ministry is not friendly and non-disruptive, butit is a life-changing, all-inclusive and confronts self-righteousness and injustice. Secondly, as with Jesus near execution in Luke, those who choose to follow Christ in his liberating work, must expect that they will find themselves in confrontation with injustice and those who propagate it. This will inevitably lead to great sacrifice and suffering. The work of grace is not all acceptance and healing. Sometimes it is a wounding battle not least because we are called to love even those we challenge. Like the people of Nazareth, there are still those who seek to own Jesus for themselves. By domesticating Jesus, and editing his message to fit our national, corporate or religious agendas, we tame the Gospel, and make it palatable, with little cost. But, as the people of Nazareth discovered, Jesus will not be tamed, and his grace, while offered to all, also challenges all that resists grace. The challenge then is to learn to speak and live both the "yes" and the "no" in the name of Christ, and not be afraid.

They took Jesus to the brow of the hill so that they might throw him off the cliff.
