Title of Unit: The World Around Us Title of Lesson: Ocean and Continents Submitted By: Suzanne Garlick

Summary of the Lesson Plan: Students will learn that some parts of the Earth are water and some parts are land. The students will create a world map out of a blue paper plate and will identify continents and oceans. A. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: All levels Grouping: Whole class-discussion and learning about continents and oceans Individual-making world map of continents and oceans B. Materials: White board Map of the world Blue paper plates Work sheet of cut out of continents Markers Word strips of continents and oceans Video-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgmZYslTBLk C. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms ocean and continent. G5.1.1A Identify water and land on a map and globe. Correctly use the terms ocean and continent.

Student-Friendly Standards I can know the difference between water and land on a map and globe. I can create a model of the globe and identify the oceans and continents.

D. Procedure: 1. Introduce the concept of land and water by showing the video on the 7 continents and 5 oceans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgmZYslTBLk 2. After viewing video of continents and oceans display map of the world. Discuss as a class the names of the continents and oceans. 3. Have students come up to map and place large word strips to represent each continent and ocean.

4. Explain to the students that they are going to create a map of the world on a paper plate. 5. Have the students cut out continents from worksheet paper and glue them on the blue paper plate. 6. Have the students label with the markers the different continents and oceans. The blue paper plate represents the blue oceans. 7. Display the students artwork on a bulletin board in the classroom. 8. CLOSURE: Today we learned the difference between continents and oceans. We also learned where they are located and the names of the continents and oceans. E. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the map the students made of the world and their correct labeling of the continents and oceans. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know that the students understand the differences between continents and oceans by their creating and labeling their own map of the world on their paper plate. F. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think that it will be easy to teach the students the difference between continents and oceans. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think that getting the students to put the correct continent in the right place on their world map might be challenging. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will try and follow up this concept in Earth Science lessons during the year. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? If the students do not understand this concept I will spend more one on one time with that student. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

If the video is unable to be seen because of technical problems we will skip to the map of the world and discuss which parts are land and water and that the land is called a continent and the water is called oceans. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? I found it hard to find a video on this subject. Example of model of world map on paper plate:
