When closed- Joop systems are used, the water is circulated through special (polyethylene plastic) piping that has been buried in the earth. The solution circulated may be a mixture of water and antifreeze. In these cases, there is, no waste water to dispose of. Open-loop systems draw water from the source and return it to an appropriate area. In many cases, returning the water is more difficult than drawing the water from the source. It is common to find soil conditions that make it necessary to install several return wells for each supply well. Each system must be designed to work in the soil conditions that exist at the job site, ‘The basic operating principle of a water-source heat pump is that heat is rejected to the water from the air being cooled in the cooling cycle and heat is extracted from the water by the air being heated in the heating cycle, Dehumidification is accomplished in the same manner as itis in air-to-air cooling units—that is, by removing water vapor from the air in the form of condensate. A fluorocarbon refrigerant is used as the heat transfer medium, just as itis in air-to-air units ‘The refrigeration system components, with the exception of some water-side items, are the same as those used in any other type of heat pump system, Water- source heat pumps are a good option for heating and cooling buildings where an adequate source of water or ground area is available. 700-227
