Definition

A method of job education where educational facilities approximate real working conditions and are equipped with actual production machinery. In a typical vestibule training situation used by a manufacturing business, less than ten trainees would be supervised by one skilled trainer, and the training provided simulates on the job training without compromising production speed or quality.

Vestibule Training A vestibule is a large entrance or reception room or area. Vestibule Training is a term for near-the-job training, as it offers access to something new (learning). In the early 1800s, factory schools were created, due to the industrial revolution, in which workers were trained in classrooms within the factory walls. The apprentice system was inadequate due to the number of learners that had to be trained as the machines of the Industrial Revolution increased the ability of the factory to produce goods. The factory owners needed trained workers quickly because there was a large demand for the produced goods. Towards the end of the 1800s, a method that combined the benefits of the classroom with the benefits of on-the-job training, called vestibule training, became a popular form of training. The classroom was located as close as conditions allowed to the department for which the workers were being trained. It was furnished with the same machines as used in production. There were normally six to ten workers per trainer, who were skilled workers or supervisors from the company. There are many advantages of vestibule training. The workers are trained as if on the job, but it does not interfere with the more vital task of production. Transfer of skills and knowledge to the workplace is not required since the classroom is a model of the working environment. Classes are small so that the learners received immediate feedback and ask questions more easily than in a large classroom. Its main disadvantage is that it is quite expensive as it duplicates the production line and has a small learner to trainer ratio Vestibule training is a particular type of on-the-job training that does not interfere with actual production. 3. Vestibule Training (Training Centre Training). Vestibule means a passage or room between the outer door and the interior of a building. In order to reach theinner of a house, one must pass from vestibule. Under vestibule training, workers are trained on special machines in a separate location i.e., class-rooms. The vestibule school is run by the Personnel Department. Training is given in artificial conditions which are just like the actual conditions The supervisor is relieved of training the new employees. He can concentrate on his other important assignements such as quality and quanitity of output. This method is followed when the number of persons to be trained is very large. Advantages: (a) The trainer is a specialist and possesses specialisation in teaching. (h) Since the training is given off the job, trainess can concentrate on learning. (c) The instructor can give individual attention as he has no other work assigned to him.

(d) The employee learns the job in a short time. Disadvtnages However this method suffers from certain limitations explained below (a) Training is given under artifical conditions, hence the worker may not adjust when he is put on actual job (h) It is expensive method as duplicate equipment is required. (c) if demand for workers is uneven, vestibule school may remain, unused for a considerable time. (d) Splitting of responsibilities may lead to organisational problems.

It is a classroom training that is often imported with the help of theequipment and machines, which are identical with those in use in the place of work. Thistechnique enables the trainees to concentrate on learning new skill rather than on performing onactual job. This type of training is efficient to train semi-skilled personnel, particularly whenmany employees have to be trained for the same kind of work at the same time. Often used totrain bank tellers, inspectors, machine operators, typists etc. In this, training is generally givenin the form of lectures, conferences, case studies, role-play etc. Examples of vestibule training include airlines that use simulators to train pilots and cabin attendants,astronauts who train in mock-up space capsules.Often used to train bank tellers, inspectors, machine operators, typistsIt is very much useful for the semi-skilled, skilled and executives. There are number of training methods available as a result of research. The training programmes commonly used to train the various levels of employees are as follow:

Vestibule Training: This term is used to designate training in classroom for skilled production and clerical jobs. Under this method employees are trained in a special training centre (vestibule) within the plant. In the vestibule an attempt is made to duplicate nearly as possible the actual work conditions of the work place. Qualified instructors provide the training under carefully planned and controlled learning conditions.

Advantages of vestibule training:

Trainees are free from the confusion and the pressure of the work situation and they can fully concentrate on the learning. It is a less time consuming process. It removes the initial nervousness of the trainees.

Disadvantages of vestibule training:


It is a costly as it involves duplication of materials, and equipments. It creates adjustment problems among the trainees when they are placed on the job. It is difficult to duplicate everything in the vestibule.

When large number of employees are to be trained. When large number of employees require training at the same time. When large number of employees require training of the same kind of work
