Title : Statistical Analysis of Rainfall Data and
Optimization of Rain Gauge Stations for Sylhet
City Corporation.
Abstract : This study deals with the development of short
duration data from daily data to assist in
hydrological studies in general to predict the
flash flood of flashy rivers and urban storm water
management in particular. This study also
estimated monthly average distribution of rainfall
in SCC which can be used to predict the time in
a general year when the rain water is available
for irrigation or rainwater harvesting purpose.
Many hydraulic engineering applications such as
those concerned with floods, the probability of
occurrence of a particular extreme rainfall, e.g. a
24-hr maximum rainfall, will have high
importance. In this study rainfall frequency
curve was developed for SCC area that is helpful
in prediction of the rainfall magnitude of specific
duration for any recurrence interval. In order to
check extreme rainfall events, time history of
monthly rainfall data were also transformed to
frequency domain using Fast Fourier Transform
(FFT). Normal curves were generated for every
month from previous data that can be used in
determining the variation of rainfall in different
months of different year. Optimal number of rain
gauge stations were finally determined which is
required for the study area to analysis rainfall
data and its prediction properly.
