Timeline Worksheet

Concept to Teach
Many students are turned off to history because it isnt interesting to them. One way to connect with history is to have students discover different approaches to presenting history. Using the United States Environmental Protection Agency websites EPAs timeline, http://www2.epa.gov/aboutepa/epa-history, students will study people and events in the history of the Environmental Protection Agency and create an Earth Day Timeline. Grades: Time: 6-8 One class period

6th Grade will do a timeline for events from 1962 to 1979. 7th Grade will do a timeline for events from 1979 to 1996. 8th Grade will do a timeline for events from 1996 to 2013.

Objectives
The students will gather meaning from formats by reading, viewing and listening for information. The students will discover important people and events in the history of the environmental protection agency. The students will construct a timeline listing the events in chronological order and demonstrate teamwork by working productively with others.

Materials
Timeline worksheet Timeline Event Cards worksheet Website http://www2.epa.gov/aboutepa/epa-history Computer for access to website Markers, pens, coloring pencils, etc. Paper for timeline

Procedure
1. 2. 3. 4. Make a copy of the timeline worksheet for each student. Make a copy of the timeline event cards for each student Mark off intervals on the classroom timeline. Assign students different dates or events from the timeline.

5. Tell students how timelines are good to visualize the major events in a given period in history such as a war or the events in someones life. 6. Tell them that they will map important events in the United States environmental history with a timeline. Point out the time intervals with the class. 7. Tell them that this is being done for the upcoming Earth Day, Monday, April 22, 2013. So that students can understand the United States history in conserving and protecting our natural resources. 8. Each student will work at a computer to read the timeline events and take notes on the Timeline worksheet for their assigned event. 9. Tell students to complete a timeline event card for their assigned event. The image can be drawn , printed images from the Internet or students can design their own creative expression representing the event.

Vocabulary
Review these terms with students. Chronology: the sequential order in which past events occur. Sequence: the following of one thing after another.

Closure
Students will fill in the events in the Timeline Event worksheet and place them on the class timeline.

Assessment
Have the class discuss the timeline , if there were any surprises, events that were of interest, etc.

Extended Learning Activities


1. Create posters of the persons or events featured in the event in history 2. Have students create additional timelines related to events on the EPA
timeline (example: the timeline of a persons life). and display near the timeline.
