Hong Kongs main harbour is Victoria Harbor named after a Queen of England. This happened when the British took over. The British wanted to expand their trading opportunities
along Chinas coast and became interested in Hong Kong in the early 19th century. They also wanted a location for their Navy. Hong Kong was returned to Chinese control in 1999.

English and Chinese are Hong Kong's two official languages. One of the most common dialects is Cantonese. Lots of people in business usually speak English. Most hotels have staff who speak other languages such as German, French and Japanese.

One of the biggest businesses in Hong Kong is fishing. They sell lots of fish overseas and in Asia. Tourism is another important industry. A much visited attraction is a cable car ride through the mountains called the Nong Ping 360. The ride takes you over the sea, into the mountains and ends up on top of a mountain where there is a monastery and a traditional village. There is also a huge statue of Buddha.

Hong Kong has a tropical climate with distinct seasons. The only predictable weather events that could have a significant impact are typhoons. Typhoon season begins in May and ends in November. When a typhoon is approaching, warnings are broadcast on television and radio. There are various degrees of warning signals issued by the Hong Kong Observatory, but when the number 8 signal is in place, most businesses and shops close down and flights may be cancelled. There is a separate warning system for heavy rain.
