III B.Tech II Semester (R09) Regular & Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2013 DESIGN & DRAWING OF STEEL STRUCTURES (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 70 Use of IS 800-2007, IS 875 Part III, Steel Tables and Railway Design Standards Code are permitted in the examination hall. Part A (Answer any one question, 1 x 28 marks) 1 A column is subjected to an axial load of 750 kN. The beam connected to the flange of the column has an eccentric load of 150 kN and the beam connected to the web of the column has an eccentric load of 60 kN. Design the column for an effective length 4m. Draw: (a) Side view of the column. (b) Plan view of the column. A simply supported beam of effective span 8 m carries a U.D.L of 40 kN/m. Taking fy = 250 N/mm2 and E = 2 x 105 N/mm2. Design the beam as laterally supported. Draw elevation and sectional details of the beam. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 x 14 marks) 3 (a) (b) Write about major types of tension members. The tension member of a roof truss carries a maximum axial tension of 250 kN. Design the section. Diameter of connecting riveters 20 mm, safe stress in tension = 150 N/mm2. Design a built up column with four angles laced together. The effective length of the column is 7.20 m and it supports a load of 1200 kN. A steel column consists of ISHB 300 with cover plate 300 mm x 25 m for each flange. The column carries an axial load of 2300 kN. Design a gusted base plate for the column. Use 18 mm diameter rivets. Design an I section purlin with and without sag bars for trussed roof from the following data: Span of roof = 10 m, spacing of purlin along slope of truss 1.8 m Spacing of truss = 4 m slope of roof truss = 1 vertical 2 horizontal Wind load on roof surface normal to roof = 1200 N/mm2. Vertical loads from roof sheets = 200 N/mm2. Design the cross section of a welded plate girder for a U.D.L of 80 kN/m. The effective span is 16 m.

Part A (Answer any one question, 1 x 28 marks) 1 A column section ISHB 300 @ 63 Kg/ m with one cover plate 400 mm x 20 mm on either side is carrying an axial load of 2000 kN inclusive of self weight of base and column. Design a gusseted base for the column. Assuming the allowable bearing pressure on concrete as 4 N/mm2 and the bending stress in base plate as 185 N/mm2. Draw: (a) Side view of gusseted base. (b) Plan view of gusseted base. (a) (b) With neat sketches explain laterally unsupported beams. Design rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with a clear span of 8 m. If carries a U.D.L. of 45 kN.m exclusive of self weight. The beam is laterally unsupported. Draw section and elevation details. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 x 14 marks) 3 Design an end connection for a tension member ICMC 300 @ 36:3 kgf/m with a 12 mm thick gusset using lug angle and 20 mm PDS rivets. The design load on the channel is 560 kN. Design a column system with two channel sections back to back 10 m long to carry an axial load of 1000 kN. The column is restrained in position but not in direction in both ends. Provide battens with riveted connections. A steel column to support a central load of 1600 kN is to be built up of four equal angles forming a square 500 mm x 500 mm. The height of the column is to be 6 m with hinged ends. Design a suitable steel base plate for the column if it is to rest on a concrete block, which can safely take a load of 2 kN/m2. A tension member carrying a force of 47 kN meets the principal tie of a truss at an angle of 450. The force in the principal tie is 81 kN. Design the members and also the welded joints. Use Yst steel. Design a welded plate girder 24 m in effective span and simply supported at the two ends. It carries a U.D.L of 100 kN/m. Use the steel with yield stress 250 MPa. *****

Part A (Answer any one question, 1 x 28 marks) 1 Design a compression member of two channels toe-to-toe. The length of the compression member is 10 m and carries a load of 1500 kN. The width over the back of channels is 400 mm. The channels are connected by batters. Draw: (a) Sectional elevation of the column. (b) Cross section of the column. Design a S.S beam to support a U.D.L of 40 kN/m. The effective span of the beam is 8 m. The compressive flange of the beam is restrained laterally due to the RC slab cast over it. Sketch the cross section details of the beam. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 x 14 marks) 3 (a) (b) Write about strength of member is axial tension. In a roof truss, a diagonal consists of an 18 A 60 mm x 60 mm x 8 m and it is connected to gusset plate by one leg only by 18 mm diameter rivets in one chain line along the length of the member. Determine tensile strength of the member. What are the advantages of welded connections over fillet welded connections? Write neat sketches and explain about different types of welds. A built up steel column comprising two ISWB 400 RSJ sections with their webs spaced at 325 mm and connected by 10 mm thick battens, transmits an axial load of 2000 kN. SBC of soil = 300 kN/m2. Safe permissible stress on the concrete bed = 4 N/mm2. Design a gusseted base. A tension member carrying a tension of 22.5 kN meets the principal rafter in a truss carrying a compressive force of 83.5 kN. Design the members. The panel length of the principal rafter is 1.75 m. Design also the welded joint if the tension member meets the principal rafter at right angles. Design the maximum section of a plate girder for a bridge, for a live load of 60 kN/m, longer than the span and dead load of 40 kN/m. The girder is simply supported over an effective span of 12 m. Part A (Answer any one question, 1 x 28 marks) 1 Design a gusseted base for the following data: Cross section of the column ISMB 400 with 200 x 10 mm cover plates on each flange. Load acting on the column 1500 kN Strength of concrete pedestal 5 N/mm2. Draw to plan, side elevation of the gusseted base. In steel roof truss, the vertical reaction at the left hand support is 500 kN. The principal rafter at this support is inclined at an angle of 300 to the horizontal. Design the main tie, the principal and the riveted joint. The panel length of the rafter may be assumed to be 1.28 m. Draw a fully dimensioned neat sketch. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 x 14 marks) 3 (a) (b) Explain the defects in welding. A tie bar 120 x 10 mm is to be connected to the other of size of 120 mm x 14 mm. The tie bars are to be loaded by a pull of 120 kN. Find out the size of end fillets such that the stress in the end fillets is the same. Take the permissible stresses in the weld = 110 N/mm2. Design mild steel built up column to carry an axial load of 2000 kN with an effective height of 6.10 m. Use 4 M.S angle sections laced together to form the columns. Design also a suitable system of lacing bars. A built up steel column comprising two ISWB 400 RSJ sections with their webs spaced at 325 mm and connected by 10mm thick battens, transmits an axial load of 2000 kN. SBC of soil = 300 kN/m2. Safe permissible stress on the concrete bed = 4 N/mm2, design a slab base.

Wind load on roof surface normal to roof = 1000 N/m2. Vertical load from roof sheets etc. = 200 N/m2.
