Course Description This online course focuses on scientific research in human cognition. Research methodologies in the field of Cognitive Psychology on memory, language, problem solving, and decision making will be covered. The best way to learn about research is to do research. You will come up with interesting research questions, conduct experiments, analyze data, and report the results scientifically following guidelines of the American Psychological Association. Course objectives: (What will I get out of taking this course?) The main objective of this course is to familiarize you with the steps involved in conducting research in the field of Experimental Cognitive Psychology. After completion of the course, you should be able to Formulate research questions Conduct literature reviews Select appropriate research designs Follow ethical guidelines related to conducting research Collect and analyze data Write up the results following the standards of the American Psychological Association Demonstrate critical thinking How can you best reach me? (see Netiquette) - Sending an email (dguess@unf.edu) only if you have private/ personal questions - Posting a question on the "Talk with the Professor" discussion board for course related questions - Coming to my office (building 51, room 3106) during office hours on Thursdays between 10:00 and 11:00 am. Modules on Blackboard Class materials will be posted on blackboard on every Monday by noon. The materials will be accessible for all students enrolled in this class. All these materials ultimately help you to write your research report. The three main topics we will address in this class are: 1. How to write and structure an APA paper 2. How to conduct experiments and to collect data 3. How to analyze all the data. Due dates Unless indicated otherwise, due dates for all assignments is Fridays at 11 p.m.

Course Requirements and Grading

(1) Introduce yourself: The Virtual Lounge BLOG: (5 points) The purpose of this assignment is to get to know each other and to get familiar with the blackboard online system. Please introduce yourself on The Virtual Lounge by a) stating your full name, b) describing your favorite leisure time activities, c) stating something unique about you (you cannot repeat what another student has mentioned already!), d) being creative, and e) completing the sentence I signed up for this Experimental Cognitive Psychology online class, because . You can return to the Virtual Lounge anytime during the semester. Grading: I will not grade your content. If you address a) to e) you will receive 5 points. If you forget to address some aspect, I have to deduct points. For further instructions on how to post your introduction on the Virtual Lounge BLOG, see: http://www.unf.edu/TwoWings.aspx? dept=15032404431&ban1=15032404429&lmenu=15032385993&ban3=15032412777&id=150324 12188&ekfxmen_noscript=1&ekfxmensel=ea2167ade_15032385993_15032386006# (2) Data collection of 15 experiments (30 points for completing all 15 experiments) Every student will do 15 experiments from the CogLab CD which will be announced later on Blackboard. For each experiment you will receive two points. For not completing one of the experiments you will receive -10 points. I know this is drastic, but we are a small class and you really need the data from all classmates to conduct meaningful statistical analyses. If you have only about 10 data sets, you can hardly do statistical tests. You will save each file with a made-up name, so your classmates do not know from whom the data are. In most experiments this is only one file, but in some experiments these are two files. This name you will always use when saving the data of each experiment. You will send me an email stating your real and your made-up name, so I can give you a grade for your completed experiments. Save your data in html format of each experiment and post it in the provided section under Experiments using the following file name (sometimes one file, sometimes two files). (NameOfExperimentasMentionedinCogLabBook_Madeupname.html) Example: MemorySpan_Rumpelstizkin.html.

(3) Discussion board: Experiences of participating in experiments (10 pts for 2 thoughtful comments) I would like to learn about your experiences with the experiments and see your critical reflections. After completing all experiments, you will post at least two discussion contributions about your experiences with these experiments. These can be general comments regarding all experiments or specific comments to two specific experiments. There are no right or wrong experiences and I do not grade the content. When using the Discussion board Use the reply button rather than the compose button if you are replying to someone else's post Avoid "I agree," "I don't know either," "Who cares," or "Ditto" type posts Do not use all caps - this is considered "shouting" and is hard to read Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation Break-up large blocks of text into paragraphs and use a space between paragraphs Grading: Points Content 10 At least 2 comments are posted Minimum 50 words for each of them Thoughtful comments You cannot post the same comment/content someone else in class posted 5 At least 1 comment is posted Minimum 40 words for each of them Not really thoughtful comments You partially repeated someone elses thoughts 0 Only 1 comment is posted Less than 30 words are used Thoughtless comment You repeated someone elses thoughts Form Proper spelling Proper grammar Complete sentences

Often correct spelling Mostly proper grammar Mostly complete sentences Incorrect spelling Improper grammar Incomplete sentences

(4) Introduction section of your APA paper with hypotheses/ Literature review (15 points) You will be assigned one of the CogLab experiments to work on. The data collected later in the semester will become part of your final research paper. But first you will start writing the introduction section for this research paper. Search at least 4 relevant and related references, three of them not being older than 2 years (articles from scientific journals!) and discuss/evaluate those in the introduction (UNF library: http://www.unf.edu/library/): - describe the purpose and relevance of your study in the first paragraph - define key terms - summarize the articles

and end with an integration of the research and at least 3 hypotheses (one is a replication of the hypothesis stated in the CogLab book). The hypotheses are derived from your articles discussed before. The Introduction consists of the title page according to APA and 2-4 text pages and the reference page. (You will not include an abstract page in this introduction, but you will include the abstract page in the final research paper). Send me an email including your introduction as an attached word document saved the following way: Lastname_Firstname_Introduction_Topic as Mentioned in CogLabBook.doc (Example: Smith_Peter_Introduction_MemorySpan.doc) IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that the quality of your hypotheses will be later reflected in your survey and this quality (thoughtfulness/creativity) will be graded - see (6). Grading: Points Content 15 Title page following APA At least 4 references, 3 of them from last 2 years Purpose is clearly described Key terms are well defined Thoughtful discussion of literature Paper is well organized and ideas flow well from one paragraph to the next At least 3 hypotheses logically derived from the discussed literature Reference page following APA 8 Title page following APA At least 3 references, 2 from the last 2 years Purpose is not well described Key terms are defined Discussion of literature is not very thoughtful Paper is not so well organized and ideas flow not so well Hypotheses are not really connected to previous parts of introduction Reference page following APA 0 Title page does not follow APA 1 reference Purpose is not well described Key terms are not defined Thoughtless discussion of literature Paper is not organized and ideas do not flow well from one to the next Hypotheses are not connected to previous parts of introduction Reference page does not follow APA Form Proper spelling Proper grammar Complete sentences APA style Writing is clear Title page 2-4 text pages Reference page Often correct spelling Mostly proper grammar Mostly complete sentences APA style is not always followed Writing is mostly clear Incorrect spelling Improper grammar Incomplete sentences APA style is mostly not followed Writing is not clear

I am spending a lot of time grading your introductions. Please take my suggestions seriously and address ALL of them adequately in the revised version of your final paper! I do not want to deduct points for you not addressing the suggested changes in the final paper. Please send the introductions as a word file (not password-protected!) to me via email to dguess@unf.edu (5) Exam 1 on APA Style (20 points) The first exam will consist mainly of multiple choice questions and assess your knowledge regarding APA style (online materials, APA publication manual). The questions will refer to all sections of a research paper in APA format, for example, introduction, method, results, discussion, references, and appendices. I want to make sure that you have all that knowledge before you start writing your research paper. You can use all your materials such as books and PowerPoint slides. You have, however, to work on this exam alone without help from others. (In 2012, at the University of Harvard, students worked in groups on an assignment. The syllabus, however, stated explicitly that they have to work alone on the assignment. Now these students are charged with academic dishonesty.) (6) Thoughtfulness and creativity of your additional surveys (10 points) You did all the 15 experiments and wrote a literature review on one specific topic that is of interest for you. Now you will have the opportunity to collect further data in class that are related to your hypotheses and allow you testing your hypotheses. These data can refer to demographics, such as gender or ethnicity; or they can refer to personality, for example, impulsiveness, extraversion, or ambiguity tolerance; or they can refer to cognition, for example, creativity, intelligence, or attention. These are just examples. The more innovative and creative you are the better. Your rationale in the introduction has to make sense. I would like you to be very thoughtful and creative here. You can use tests that you find on the internet even if they are not optimal. Your survey/test should consist of about 7-20 questions. Thus your questions refer to the literature you discussed in your literature review. Some demographic information is not allowed because of the confidential content such as criminal record, use of illegal drugs, sexual preferences, etc. Not allowed are also questions regarding age (because of the narrow age range in our class) and regarding caffeine. (7) Data collection of completion of all additional surveys (10 points) You will post your survey on backboard in the specific discussion forum of your experiment using your real name (e.g. Original_Survey_Mental_Rotation_Susan_Boyle.doc) and you will answer all the surveys of all other classmates in all the other experiment discussion forums using their made up names (e.g., experiment_name_made_up_name.doc, e.g. Mental_Rotation_Brianna.doc). Use the same made-up name you used for each experiment before and use anonymous posting. 8 points will be deducted for each survey not being filled out. Again, we are a small class and really need the data of everybody to run meaningful tests. I will ask everyone in class to send me a short

Email indicating a) your real and your made-up name, b) the name of your experiment, c) who did complete their survey (tell me their made-up names) and d) who did not complete the survey or who did not provide adequate answers (tell me only their made-up names) for the researchers it is often apparent who does not take the survey seriously. Forgetting to send the email will result in a deduction of 5 points. (8) 3 Hypotheses with tests are due (3 x 3 = 9 points) I want to help you and make sure you are running the correct statistical tests for your three hypotheses. That way you will not get points deducted in the results section of the research paper. Therefore, you will state your three hypotheses in a Word document and for each hypothesis you will name the kind (categorical or continuous) and levels (1 or 2 or 3 or) of the independent variable(s) (IV), the kind (categorical or continuous) and levels (1 or 2 or 3 or) of the dependent variable(s) (DV), and the name of the test you intend to run. Remember that you have to run and report three different tests for your research paper. For this assignment, however, you do not need to run and report the tests yet. You will send the word document to me. Use the following file name: lastname_firstname_3hyp.doc (e.g., Smith_Tom_3hyp.doc). Files turned in after the deadline will not be accepted and you will receive 0 points for this assignment. (9) Research paper (60 points) Every student will work individually on one research project. You will collect data on one of the CogLab experiments. A list of possible experiments will be posted on Blackboard. Every student will then be assigned one experiment topic. You will collect data from every student in class and analyze those statistically and write a complete research paper (12-16 pages total). The paper will consist of: Title page according to APA (2 points) Abstract (4 points): The abstract is a concise, informative summary of your research study in less than 200 words. It summarizes theory/hypotheses, participants, method, results, and discussion. Introduction (10 points): Search at least 4 relevant and related references, 3 of them being not older than 2 years (journal articles, no internet websites!) and discuss/evaluate those in the introduction. Describe the purpose of your study, define key terms, and end with an integration of the research and at least 3 hypotheses or research questions (about 2-4 pages). Methods (10 points): Your methods section will describe participants, instruments, and procedure. Justify your approach. Results (15 points): In the results section, you will discuss your results and statistical analyses. You will run and report at least 3 different tests, one of them being an ANOVA. (You can use two different ANOVAs as two different tests). Use appropriate statistical tests and mention all results, even non significant ones.

Discussion (10 points): In the discussion section you relate your results to the literature you discussed in the introduction and you discuss alternative explanations, limitations of the study, relevance, and recommendations for future research. References (5 points): The paper ends with a complete reference list including relevant research. Your paper will follow the guidelines of the American Psychological Association. Appendix (5 points): Your appendix will include your survey. It is followed by at least one table and at least one figure following APA style (see examples in APA manual). You might want to use the Excel program to create a figure. You will use the SPSS program (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for your data analysis. Copy the complete SPSS output for each of your tests of each hypothesis in the following part of your research paper and label it Appendix B. You do not need to format this SPSS output. I just want to see the results of your SPSS tests. Papers without the SPSS output will have 20 points deducted, because I cannot verify that you did your data analysis and that you know what you are doing.

Paragraph: At the end of your research paper you will write the following paragraph and sign it: I, (your name), testify that I only used the material indicated in the reference list and that no one else wrote this paper or helped me in writing this paper besides myself. I also did not and will not use this paper or parts of it for an assignment in another class. (your name) Electronic signature Papers without this statement will not be accepted and will be graded with 0 points. You will turn in your research paper on the discussion board called "Research Paper". All other students will have access to the papers in class, because they will read and evaluate research papers of two other classmates - see (9). (10) Peer Review of 2 Papers of Colleagues (10 points per paper = 20 points total) You will be assigned to read two papers of other students. Submit your 12-16 page research paper on the discussion board on the specific day for peer review. Avoid symbols other than letters or numbers in the name of the document. Use the following format for your research paper: Lastname_Firstname_ResearchPaper_ExpCogPsy_TitleOfYourPaper.doc. Every student must not only submit his/her research proposal, but must be a reviewer of 2 other research reports submitted. Why are we doing this? This is like in the real world. Authors of scientific papers or grant proposals receive peer-reviews. It sometimes hurts to receive criticism, but if this criticism has substance and is written supportively, it often helps us to learn from our mistakes and to improve our work. You will also see how difficult it is to read papers critically and give feedback with substance. You will post at least one discussion thread answering the following two questions: 1. What are the strengths of the research paper? (Mention at least 2 points) 2. What could improve in a revision? (Mention at least 3 points) Please try to be constructive in your feedback. Keep your feedback professional, neutral, and supportive.

I want to see specific feedback!

Grading: Points Content 20 At least 2 strengths and 3 weaknesses are mentioned for each of the two reviews Minimum 200 words in total for each of the two reviews Thoughtful comments for each of the two reviews Support arguments with evidence for each of the two reviews Feedback is specific to the content of the paper and does not repeat what most other students wrote. 10 At least 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses are mentioned for each of the two reviews Minimum 200 words in total for each of the two reviews Not really thoughtful comments for each of the two reviews Partial evidence is given for arguments for each of the two reviews 0 Only 1 strength and 1 weakness is mentioned for each of the two reviews Less than 100 words in total for each of the two reviews Thoughtless, too basic comments for each of the two reviews No evidence is given for arguments for each of the two reviews Form Proper spelling Proper grammar Complete sentences

Often correct spelling Mostly proper grammar Mostly complete sentences Incorrect spelling Improper grammar Incomplete sentences

(11) Exam 2 on Statistics and Tests (20 points) The second exam will be a multiple choice exam referring to all the statistical tests we have learned in the class (online materials, SPSS survival manual, APA publication manual): Pearson correlation, Partial Correlation, Regression, Chi-square test, independent samples t-test, paired samples t-test, one-way between groups ANOVA, one-way repeated measures ANOVA, two-way between groups ANOVA, mixed between-within groups ANOVA; Additionally the exam will refer to syllabus, kinds of different variables, hypotheses, commands in SPSS, and writing up the results according to APA style. You can use all your materials such as books and PowerPoint slides. You have, however, to work on this exam alone without help from others. (In 2012, at the University of Harvard, students worked in groups on an assignment. The syllabus, however, stated explicitly that they have to work alone on the assignment. Now these students are charged with academic dishonesty.) (12) Discussion board: Class Evaluation (5 points) I have taught this Experimental Cognitive Psychology class more than 10 times in the normal classroom setting but only a few times as an online class. I would like to learn and improve this class and am looking forward to receiving your feedback. I also would like to hear critical feedback and therefore I am not grading your comments. I would like to encourage you to express your honest opinions. Again, you have to mention at least two aspects but the content of your comments/feedback is not graded. I will just see who posted something and will assign 5 points. I

will see on blackboard who responded, but I will not see who wrote what. That way you can be very honest!

Netiquette and Other Information (alphabetical order)

Here are some necessary additional information and my expectations for how we communicate and interact with each other during this course: 1. Assignments and Exams: I do not allow make-up quizzes or make-up assignments. You are expected to take the quizzes or turn in assignments on the scheduled dates. Otherwise you will receive 0 points. 2. Being Online: Even though this is an online class, I am not online and available 24/7. I will be online at least 4 times a week, though, but never on Sundays. I also expect everyone in class to be online at least 3 times a week.

3. Blackboard: Make sure you have a basic understanding of Bb. If you have not previously used Bb, please consider attending one of the student sessions sponsored by ITS: https://www.unf.edu/anf/its/services/Blackboard.aspx. If you have technical questions, please direct them to the HELP Desk (620-4357). 4. Civility: In a face-to-face situation, we pick up nonverbal signals in a conversation and can address miscommunication relatively easily. In this online class, communication occurs through writing and we do not have these nonverbal cues available. Thus, we will be respectful and supportive in our communications at all times. Try also to be as clear as possible. Disrespectful conduct towards others in this course is grounds for failing the course, regardless of the quality of the disrespectful students work. 5. Copyright/Intellectual Property: The materials on this course Web site are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further disseminated. 6. Disability: Students with disabilities who seek reasonable accommodations in the classroom or other aspects of performing their coursework must first register with the UNF Disability Resource Center (DRC) located in Building 57, Room 1500. DRC staff members work with students to obtain required documentation of disability and to identify appropriate accommodations as required by applicable disability laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). After receiving all necessary documentation, the DRC staff determines whether a student qualifies for services with the DRC and if so, the accommodations the student requires will be provided. DRC staff then prepares a letter for the student to provide faculty advising them of approved accommodations. For further information, contact the DRC by phone (904) 620-2769, e-mail drcexams@unf.edu, or visit the DRC website www.unf.edu/drc Military and veteran students may need both physical and academic accommodations and may contact the DRC to find further information. Military and veteran students who return from combat exposure may be utilizing the post 9/11 GI bill to continue postsecondary education goals. Contact Military and Veterans Resource Center by phone (904) 620-2655 or e-mail mvrc@unf.edu 7. Discussion Boards: Again, a discussion board is not like a blog or twitter you might be used to. I expect quality and thoughtful comments, correct grammar and spelling, and civility. Make sure to check the Discussion Boards at least twice per week (but more often is better). Use the appropriate Discussion Board. If you want to send me a personal message (e.g., about a grade), please send me an email and do not use the Discussion Board. Remember that the Discussion Boards are posted on Mondays and close on the following Fridays at 11 pm. This will give you enough time to post thoughtful comments. 8. Emails: Most of your questions will be asked and answered in the discussion board section Talk with the Professor, because other students might have similar questions and might benefit from your question and my answer. Technical questions will be addressed to the HELP desk (620-4357). Use email sparingly and only for private questions. I will read emails almost every day and respond to emails within 48 hours. I will not check emails during the weekends. I expect you to check your UNF emails at least twice a week. Keep your UNF email account active. When you send me an

email please include the course title (EXP3680C or Experimental Cognitive Psychology) in the subject line. I will respond to your emails if you are courteous and considerate. Sign your emails with both your first and last name, check spelling and grammar, and use paragraphs. 9. Internet Connection: It is your responsibility to have a reliable internet connection. The computer sin the computer labs and library at UNF are also available if you run into problems. 10. Office hours: This is an online class, but you might have many questions that are difficult to ask via email or online. Please feel free to come to my office hours in building 51, office 3106 on the third floor. My office hour time is reserved for students and I am very happy to see students and to help. You can also make an appointment with me at another time. 11. Plagiarism/ Academic Integrity: I expect students to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity in this course. You want to be proud of the work that you produce. This course will follow UNF policy with regards to issues of academic honesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration) and proper conduct in the classroom, as detailed in the Academic Integrity Code of the University of North Florida in the Student Handbook. Plagiarism or cheating will result in 0 points for this assignment and you will not be eligible to pass this course. Depending on the seriousness of the circumstances, the Dean or Vice President for Student Affairs will be informed and additional actions will be taken. 11. Questions Talk with the Professor: There will be one section on the discussion board called Talk with the Professor. Here you can ask your questions. It is comparable to raising your hand in the regular classroom. Before asking a question, I expect every student to read the previous postings and to check if the question was asked and answered already before. Often times, students will be able to answer questions of other students. 13. Style: This is not a blog or twitter site. I expect complete sentences, correct grammar, proper spelling. 14. Time investment: There is often a misconception that online classes are "easy" classes. I believe, they are often harder than face-to-face classes, because they require more self-discipline and time management of the students. I estimate that students who get an "A" in this class, dedicate per average about 7 hours of concentrated work per week for this class.
NOTE: This schedule and syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor .
I look forward to working with you,

C. Dominik Gss
