7. As a class, read p.28-29, pausing to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 8. Students should be taking notes and recording information in their Study Guide during the reading of the lesson. Any questions that are left unanswered may be finished when the class is finished reading. 9. Ask questions in the margins of the TE as a continual check for understanding. Focus on the following questions about groups, leaders, and rules. (TE 27)Is a family a group? Why? (TE 27)In what way are families, classes, teams, and choirs alike? (TE 28)What is a leader? (TE 28)What are some groups that have leaders? (TE 28)Why do most groups have rules? (TE 28)Why do you think people in some groups talk about their rules?

10. Hand out blank paper and have the students answer the following questions: What groups do most people belong to? Why are rules important to a community or group of people? 11 Turn to p.34-35 in the text. Introduce the vocabulary for the map part of the lesson. 12. Follow the TE suggestions on p.34 Teach the Skill. 13. Place students in small groups or pairs to discuss the illustration on p.35. After a few minutes, bring students back for whole group discussion of the map. 10. CLOSURE: Review the vocabulary and objectives together. Clarify any confusion about maps and symbols. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will complete a basic map (community map provided). They will need to make a key and assign symbols to the following map features-school, houses, supermarket, trees, and gas station. They also need to include a compass rose on their paper, and create a title for their map. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. As students are discussing maps in their small groups, teacher will circulate the room and note understanding.

Students will show understanding of the map symbols assignment by correctly connecting the symbol with the picture on their map, have the compass rose in the correct position, and create an appropriate title. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest to teach will be the Reading Skills page. Children group themselves in groups based on commonality, so they are familiar with it. They may be surprised, however, when they find out some of their peers may be in a group with them that they didnt expect. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging will be teaching the students how to transfer information to and from the key and map they create. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? A follow-up to this lesson will be in lesson/day 6. The map concept is discussed further and students will continue working with map concepts. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Graphic Organizer 6 on p.29 of the TE may be used to help students who do grasp the concept of groups. Graphic Organizer 1 may be used with students struggling with the concept of rules. To help students with the map concept, we could look at different types of maps and look for similarities and examples of symbols on the maps. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The only part I may need to change is to spend more time on the map concepts. And I may need to rethink the map creating if it is too frustrating for students. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult was lining up the standard to the lesson. So much of the lesson focus is more toward civics than focused on geography. I think this would work, I might just need to revamp some of it.
