Dinosaurs
A long time ago the world looked different. Many of the plants and animals were different from the ones we know today.

There were many kinds of dinosaurs. Dinosaurs came in all sizes. Some were small and some were very, very big. Some ate plants and others were meat eaters. The Compsognathus was a very small dinosaur. The Compsognathus was as small as a chicken. The Ultrasaurus was a very large dinosaur. It probably could have reached up and peaked into a 5 story building. It weighed eighty tons. All that is left today from the dinosaurs are their skeletons. After a dinosaur died it became a skeleton. It was covered with dirt and mud.

Many museums have dinosaur skeletons on display. The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois has permanent exhibits of dinosaur skeletons. They include Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex and many other skeletons. They have and a walkthrough time machine for visitors to experience a journey through prehistoric time. The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC has many real fossils. Viisitors can see fossil workers working with actual bones.

Tyrannosaurus Rex
The Tyrannosaurus Rex (ty-ran-ah-sor-us) is called the tyrant or terrible lizard. It was as tall as a two story house. The Tyrannosaurus Rex had two arms and walked on its two, powerful back legs. Each big foot had three long toes with claws. Its arms were too short and too weak to help it eat. It snapped food with its mouth. It was a carnivore. It had a long tail that was stiff and pointed. Its tail helped it to balance. Its bones were hollow. Its jaws were as much as four feet long. Some of its teeth were over nine inches long. Its skin was similar to the skin of an alligator, scaly, bumpy and rough.

Apatosaurus
The Apatosaurus was one of largest land animals that ever lived. The dinosaur was previously known as the Brontaurus. The Apatosaurus was as big as two large classrooms. It had a very long neck and a long, whip like tail. Its average length was about 70 - 90 feet long. The teeth of the Apatosaurus were long and thin. It is believed the dinosaur was a plant eater. Its front legs were smaller than its back legs. Its nostrils were on top of its head.

Stegosaurus
The front legs of the Stegosaurus were short and the back legs were long. The body of this dinosaur was very large, heavy, and bulky. The Stegosaurus had two rows of pointed, bony plates. They would stick out from its tail and back. It is not sure of what use the bony plates were to the dinosaur. Some scientists believe they were used to protect themselves from other dinosaurs and predators. Others think they were also used to regulate how cool or warm the dinosaur wanted to be. The Stegosaurus could grow as long as 25 feet to 30 feet long. It was an herbivore It ate ferns and many other kinds of plants.

Triceratops
The legs of the Triceratops were short and strong. It was probably slow moving. It had a parrot-shaped beak. It used its beak to eat plants. The Triceratops had the biggest head of all the dinosaurs. The triceratops had three horns on its head. One was short by its nose. Two of them were longer above its eyes. It had a large, bony plate that projected from the back of its skull. This is called a frill. They were about forty feet long. Their tail was short and pointed. They had hoof-like claws.
