Man carrying 406 gold bangles held

BANGALORE, DHNS: Talghattapura police seized 406 gold bangles from a man during a random check of vehicles at the Tataguni checkpost on the City outskirts in the early hours of Tuesday. The bangles weigh 4.4 kg and are valued at Rs 1.5 crore. The police stopped a car at 3:30 am and spotted a bag stacked with gold bangles of different shapes and sizes inside it. Guru Singh, 26, the driver of the car, was arrested when he failed to produce relevant documents for the jewellery. During interrogation, he said he was a native of Rajasthan and a resident of Chennai. He claimed he was a wholesale manufacturer of gold ornaments and that he had brought the bangles to market them to jewellers in Bangalore and seek orders for bulk production. Talaghattapura police said prima facie, the material did not look like inducements for voters. However, a case has been registered against Singh under Section 102 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Union govt moots congestion tax to ease traffic woes

According to Traffic Training Institute, Bangalore, due to unattractive public transport facility, dependence among public to using personal transport is very high in City. The vehicle-to-people ratio is highest in Bangalore in the entire country. While it is 1:4 in New Delhi, it is 1:8 in Mumbai, and 1:2 in City. However, officials believe that levying tax or fee for movement of vehicle in peak traffic areas should easily bring the traffic down by about 25 per cent to 30 per cent. Additional Commissioner (Traffic and Security) M A Saleem told Deccan Herald that even with the proposed congestion tax it is difficult to control the number of vehicles as owning vehicles has become more of aspiration rather than necessity. BANGALORE: Ever imagined how it would be to lose your voice? To not be able to speak or even hear your own voice? For patients who suffer from cancer of the voice box, it is an everyday nightmare. A laryngectomee, often called a lary, is a person whose voice box has been surgically removed because of throat cancer. The patients speak through their food pipe, a prosthetic device. They lose their normal way of speaking because their vocal cords are removed. On Tuesday, the Laryngectomee Club of Karnataka held its first meeting coinciding with the World Voice Day. The club is a rehabilitation centre for the larys and it helps them cope with their new voice and reconnect with society.
