Table of contents

Introduction 1 Objectives
This document describes the setup recommendations for ATV31 drives powered directly by DC voltage on the PA (+) and PC (-) terminals. The DC voltage can come either from an external source, or from a DC voltage bus created by connecting several drives together.

Example of use
Connection of drives to the same DC bus is generally used to limit the braking power dissipated in resistors when all drives in the system are not operating as generators simultaneously.

Limitation
0.2 kW to 7.5 kW ATV31 drives must be fitted with version V1.7 IE09 software or higher to allow clearing of ground short circuit faults as described on ., except for the application example described on 5.

11 and 15 kW drives have a different way of detecting ground faults and are not affected by this software limitation.

General precautions 2 Short circuit protection

Each drive must be connected to the DC bus via two fuses capable of cutting out the DC current so that if a short circuit occurs in one of the drives on the DC bus, the other drives connected to the same DC bus are not irreparably damaged. A fused isolator can be used to isolate each drive of the DC bus. For selection of the correct fuse, see the table on .

Balancing line currents

With the exception of special cases (see ), all the drives must be connected to the AC line supply. In order to balance the line currents between the different drives connected to the DC bus, and to prevent overloading of the input bridge on any one drive, they must be powered by the same line supply using the line choke recommended for each of them. The catalogue gives the references of the line chokes recommended for use with the ATV31.

Powering on sequence
All the drives connected to the DC bus must be powered on simultaneously to prevent the rectifiers of lowpower drives charging the capacitors of high-power drives. We also recommend validating the powering on of low-power drives by checking that of high-power drives. The sequence described on can be used as a model.

Fault management
Line supply phase loss
Line supply phase loss faults must be validated on all drives present on the DC bus. This is necessary in order to prevent a low-power drive from powering the DC bus on its own if the line supply of one of the more powerful drives is lost.

Ground fault detection

Under certain operating conditions, imbalances on the input currents of each drive can occur. The ATV31 is able to detect ground short circuits via a DC toroid sensor placed on the input phases of the line supply, which indicates a fault under these conditions. All ratings up to 7.5 kW inclusive are affected. To disable the ground fault detection, it is only possible with hidden word since the software version V1.7 IE09. Take contact with the technical support in case of tripping in fault (SCF).

Excessive braking
If the application requires braking resistors to prevent overvoltage tripping on the DC bus, the resistors must be installed on the drives in decreasing order of power.

Contactor sequence for powering via the line supply

The following sequence can be used as the basis for defining connection of the line supply inputs of drives connected to a DC bus. Powering on of drive n is only permitted if drive n-1 is powered. In order to comply with the constraint of powering on drives in decreasing order of power, they must be wired so that P1 P2 P3 Pn. The sequence can be completed by the following options to enhance the safety of the system:

- use an auxiliary contact of the fused isolator providing the link to the DC bus, configured in series with the line contactor control of the relevant drive, in order to prevent the drive being powered on when it is not connected to the DC bus. - for each drive connected to the line supply, use an auxiliary contact of its line contactor configured in series with the logic inputs controlling switching on of the motor, in order to prevent the drive being switched on when it is not connected to the line supply. use the fault relays of the drives in the powering on sequence. If the relays are inserted in the main branch of the sequence (series configuration with "on" or "off"), ensure that the rated current of the relay is not exceeded (5A, 250V~ on R1A, R1B, R1C contacts).

4 Special cases 5 Connecting a low-power ATV31 to a DC bus

A drive can be connected to a DC bus without being powered by the line supply if the following conditions are complied with: - the power of the drive to be connected is less than or equal to 5% of the total power, - all the other drives are connected to the line supply with line choke.

In this case, the input rectifiers and charge circuits of the drives powered by the line supply can accept this overload when the devices are powered up and also under Drive 1 Drive 2 Drive 3 Drive n power power power power continuous operation. P1 P2 P3 Pn In this case, despite the fact that the ATV31 is not connected to the line supply, it is not necessary to clear ground short circuit faults. All the other recommendations apply under the same conditions.

Connecting another drive to the ATV31 DC bus

Different types of drive can be connected to the same DC bus (ATV58, ATV11, ATV28, etc.). The same wiring recommendations apply: use of fuses and line choke, compliance with powering on sequences as a function of drive power, and fault management. Refer to the technical note of each drive for further information. Regarding the principal used to detect ground short circuits, it will not be necessary to clear this fault, as is necessary with the ATV31. Similarly, regarding the principal of detecting line supply phase losses, it may be necessary to clear this fault in lowpower drives not connected to the line supply.
