Step 1: Chasis (chassis)

Step 5: Soporte del portamotor (motor carrier support)

I did a counterpoint, other chuck, other grinder support and a manual cutting tool. With these new tools I am doing some little wood works: a pot and a top. I spent two weeks in Sao Paulo, and at times I did not realize that they speak to me in another language. Educated people pronounce the Portuguese very clearly, and one who speaks Spanish can understand almost everything. Now to the issues of the chuck to hold a piece of wood: there are plenty of ways to do it, you choose the one that suits you. Maybe you want have more than one chuck, for use according to the size of the piece. It is not the same turning a dish that a chess piece.

May 26, 2010. 1:52 AM REPLY thats a decent machine you made. to harden your drill-bit you could caseharden it. i dont know if you are familiar with this process or not but to do this you would put the piece (or pieces) to be hardened in a steel container full of bone charcoal, close the container with a steel lid, make sure it has a couple of gasventing holes (3mm in diameter is good, doesnt suck the flame back inside if flammable charcoal vapours catch fire during the casehardening firing) then to harden it, put the closed container in a bed of coals of a fire and feed the fire throughout a day, so that the steel container is red-hot throughout the time. when the container is completely cooled again, then the pieces of iron (the drill-bit) will have a thin coating on all sides of harder high carbon steel, which shrinks over the iron and makes it as hard and strong as steel but not as brittle because of the inner core of relatively flexible iron.

I had planned to use a little potassium ferrocyanide I retain from 30 years ago. Anyway, the main problem remains the lack of a forge, of which there are many interesting designs in Instructables. Sorry, this is the second main problem, first is that I have so many things on hand that I never make time.

At first it was disappointing because I did have not a teacher and then it cost me a lot to learn. But now I'm very happy because welding helps to do things that would otherwise be impossible, or would take much longer, or be more costly. (Tu torno es ms elaborado. Sep 2, 2009. 6:42 PM REPLY I must agree sometimes welding in indispensable, I had to weld some things on my lathe myself. But I avoid welding as much as I can too. I never know when I want to make a change, and welded up things are difficult to work on. That, and with welding there are always unavoidable distortions. I also concede the point you make about time too. I average about a part a day when I build something now. The lathe shown took around two months for me to make. It is a rebuild of a lathe that I welded together in a day! I had to repurpose the old headstock on the old version to another task so the whole machine had to be redone. For sentimental reasons I reused as much as I could of the old machine in the remake. I've a lot of hardware collected up, and a fair selection of taps and dies now too, so for me welding is the more expensive option. Gasses, electricity, and rods cost me money! Everything aside, for general fabrication I still prefer fasteners for their accuracy, strength, and versatility. For me it is worth the extra effort. I feel the results speak for themselves too.
