LINC ACKNOWLEDGES AND WELCOMES THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION'S ENDORSEMENT OF CIVIL MARRIAGE FOR LGBT CITIZENS OF IRELAND Last weekend, the constitutional reform body voted by 79% in favour to recommend that the Government take steps to provide for equal recognition of marriage for same-sex couples. The Convention will now submit a recommendation to Government to provide equal recognition of marriage for same-sex couples. The Government will publish its decision on what it proposes to do with the recommendation within 4 months, including a decision on whether or not to hold a referendum on the issue. Having the right to a civil marriage with full and equal rights same is about giving lesbian and gay couples and familys access to equality in Ireland. Marriage provides certain social, material and familial protections that are currently not given to lesbian and gay couples and families in Ireland. Civil Partnership creates a separate and unequal institution. Failing to recognize children within same-sex families ignores issues such as: maintenance; inheritance; guardianship; custody and access. There is no safeguarding the interests of the child Having the right to choose to marry is a fundamental right provided for in all societies. LINC is delighted with the vote and looks forward to the coming months and advancing what is a basic human right for all.
