KS4 Pygmalion NIA ATHLETICS Year 7 Maths Crescent Theatre Our Best Results Cross Curricular! Students from year 9 and year 10 recently The first Maths Across the Curriculum Day Ever Students from year 7 & 8 visited the Crescent Theatre in Birminghams was held on Wednesday 6th March 2013, competed in the East Birmingham (area)
Brindleyplace to watch a performance of Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. Some of the students knew the plays basic plot from the famous film version My Fair Lady, and were intrigued to see how the original stage play measured up. Needless to say the university society whose production it was did an excellent job and all the students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the show. A number of students commented on how much they enjoyed it saying things like, The actors all played their parts very well. I would definitely like to go on a trip like this again! The production gave the students a chance to be up-close to the actors in a relatively small environment, and to see how with minimal stage props and effective characterisation a play can really come to life. The students enthusiasm and behaviour was exemplary, and our thanks go to Mr. Croydon and Mr. Harper for providing the transportation. Heres to future silly tomfoolery and every squashed cabbage leaf who wanted to be a Duchess! Athletics, where they beat KESH, Ninestiles and Archbishop Ilsley. Because of this, on Thursday 7th February these students went to compete at the NIA Athletic competition. Cockshut Hill students had to do track and field events against another 9 schools from the whole of Birmingham. We did exceptionally well in the track heats producing many 1st and 2nd places. it ran parallel to World Maths Day, part of the World Education Games which ran world-wide via the internet. All of Year 7 took part in Maths Across the Curriculum Day, looking out for where maths skills were used in other lessons and also taking part in a Pirates Treasure Quiz. Various clues were hidden around the College and pupils were encouraged to seek out the clues and complete the quiz. Many staff commented on how keen and enthusiastic pupils were to find the answers; there was lots of evidence of social skills and team work being used by Year 7 during the day.

All the pupils were a credit to the school in their determination and behaviour. Overall the year 8 Girls came 5th which is the highest the girls have ever been placed. The year 7 boys came 3rd and got on the podium to receive their medals. This is the best achievement the boys have ever had at the NIA Athletics. The year 8 boys came 8th. This was our best year at the Athletics we have ever had and we cant wait for next year to see what we can do.

Silver Surfer Club

In conjunction with the Old Brookside Senior Citizen Center (a part of the Yardley Trust) our Post 16 students have instigated a Silver Surfer activity. This a part of the 6th. Form Enrichment programme and runs every Wednesday between 2:00 P.M. & 3:30 in the Learning Pad. As many of the clients are at a variety of stages in their use of ICT its soon become apparent that a one-toone is necessary (rather than a set course). The ICT Department have provided a basic framework within which the clients work but each, individual, requirement is being met and this suits the visitors better. Many of the 6th Form from ICT volunteered originally but these are now supplemented by other enthusiastic students. We hope that this aspect of community liaison will long continue.

D o r s e t T r i p History Quest EASTER Student Report Winners-Year 10 CELEBRATIONS

Dorset is a place of undeniable beauty with geographical features and formation in every part of the area. Dorset is a bit of a tradition in the Geography department and it never fails to impress. Another fantastic Geography trip provided by Mr Stanier, Miss Dixon and this time around Mr Evans. Plenty of laughs, discussions, cups of tea and above all, knowledge! A traditional trip to Old Harry ended up being a (very) long walk across many hills. We walked into Swanage town centre, which was perfect for the Unit 1 exam the year 12s are sitting in May as it gives them a real life application of the processes along the coast. A sand dunes field work session on Friday was surprisingly good with a tour guide who was pretty much Bear Grylls eating flowers and an unusual version of bingo. He provided us with invaluable tips and methods in terms of field work, ideal for the year 12s whos knowledge of sand dunes took on a real life aspect ready for their summer exam, and also brilliant for some of us year 13s who are heading to university to do Geography. Saturday saw a trip to a castle to look at tourism opportunities and a venture into somewhere different this year, Bournemouth. A walk into the town centre provided the opportunity for food and shopping and a very long journey back to the cosy bungalow. All the time this trip was providing the evidence to the theory that were taught in the classroom. Whether its coastal processes and protection for the Year 12s or even sustainability issues and management for the Year 13s topics. A great opportunity for us to spend time with likeminded people to who Geography is a passion and the chance to get to know people from different year groups which is what makes these trips so successful! A massive thank you to the teachers for this trip yet again being one of the best ever! Emma Fitzgerald (6th Form Student). Yesterday a group of 26 Year 10 GCSE History students took part in a History event at the University of Birmingham where they were competing against numerous other secondary and grammar schools throughout the Birmingham and other regional areas. The students found the whole experience thoroughly inspirational, especially the lecture from the local Birmingham professor, Carl Chinn. In the afternoon all schools competed in the History Quest Quiz where they had to answer general knowledge questions from a range of History topics, including famous people from the West Midlands. All groups took part with eagerness and we are pleased to say that one of our groups won the Year 10 event, after a closely fought 3 way tiebreaker. Well done to all in The Hills group and to our Year 10 students who participated. You made us proud! Thank you to Mr Vadher for organising the trip and Mr Glasswell for his assistance.
