Materials String Theory Caper Sock, 400 yards (Grove) = 1 ball 2 spools of reinforcing yarn for heel and toe. size 1 double pointed needles (or two circular needles) or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 8 st = 1 inch 10 rows = 1 inch

Stitch Definitions k = knit p = purl dec = decrease rem = remaining SKP = slip 1, k1, pass slipped stitch over k st P2tog = purl 2 stitches together yo = yarn over Lh = left hand needle Begin Sock Cast on 16 stitches per needle (for double pointed) or 32 sts (circular needles) for a total of 64 stitches. K2, P2 around 4 rows Begin pattern. Pattern: Row 1: (k2, p2, yo, k2, with lf needle pull yo over 2 sts just k and drop, p2) 8X Row 2: (k2, p2) 16X Row 3: (yo, k2, with lf needle pull yo over 2 sts just k and drop, p2, k2, p2) 8X Row 4: (k2, p2) 16X

Keep in pattern until desired length. Begin heel (straight heel cap) Heel is knit in stockinette. Pick up reinforcing thread. K28 stitches. Transfer rem 4 sts to 2nd circular needle or 3rd dp needle. Work heel back and forth in stockinette over these 28 sts Leave remaining sts unworked. Edge st: slip the first st of each row to facilitate picking up heel sts. Heel length: work 26 rows Next row (rs): k13 sts to center, k2, SKP (sl 1, k1, psso), k1, turn Next row: (ws): sl 1 purlwise, p5 (= 2 sts past the center), p2tog, p1, turn Next row: sl 1 knitwise, k to within 1 st of turning gap, skp, k1, turn Next row: sl 1 purlwise, p to within 1 st of turning gap; p2tog, p1, turn. Rep last 2 rows until half 14 sts Rep last 2 rows, but discontinue dec at end of each row (rs). Cut reinforcement thread to be woven in at end. Connect heel to sock body. Knit sock foot in stockinette. Pick up heel sts along both edges and k. Continue in rnds as follows. Dec will be on each heel side of sock every other row. Work to last 2 sts heel side, k2tog; work even over sts on needles 2 and 3 or 2nd circular needle holding 36 sts; SKP at beg of next needle (heel side). Rep dec rnd until there are the same number of stitches before beg heel (28 sts). Redistribute sts so that 16 sts each needle if working dp or 32 sts ea needle with circulars. Work in rnds until foot is appropriate length before toe. Toe dec (add reinforcing thread) Dec rnd 1: On 1st and 3rd needles, k to last 2 sts, k2tog; on 2nd and 4th needles, k2 SKP on first two sts With circular needles, dec on beg and end of needle Rep dec rnd every other row until half the sts remain. Then rep dec rnd every rnd until 10 sts rem. Cut yarn and pull through rem sts or finish with 3-needle bind off. Follow same pattern for second sock. Weave in ends.
