This year in Science we are going to be learning about the Land Animals of the Sixth Day. But before we learn about specific types of animals we are going to learn about a few general topics such as zoology, zoologists, where animals live, and why some animals go into extinction. b) Content I will ask the students to take out their textbooks Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and open to page one, the first page after the table of contents called Lesson 1 What is Zoology?. We will read the first two paragraphs together as a class. I will ask the students who can tell me the definition of zoology? I will tell the students that we will be making science notebooks this year and will be using them to do many different activities and they will be important for grades. Today we will be making cover pages for our notebooks, I will ask a student to hand out white sheets of paper to all of the students. I will tell them that they can cut out pictures from magazine, or draw and colour their own cover pages and they can be as creative as they want but they have to include their names, the title Zoology Notebook and animals in some way. When the students as done their cover pages I will tell them that their first assignment for their notebooks is to write out their own definition for the word Zoology.

c) Evaluation I will evaluate the students based on the completion of the assignment. The creativity, proper completion (including the three required components) of the cover page, and the completion of the first notebook assignment the definition of zoology will all be evaluated. d) Closure I will ask the students to tell me what their assignment was so that I know that they understand what was asked of them. I will tell the students when they have five minutes left in the class to finish their assignments and that any unfinished work is assigned as homework to be completed before the next class.

I will ask the students to hand in any completed homework from the last class. I will then ask the students if they can tell me their own definition of zoology (I will take 2-4 answers). b) Set Induction I will ask the students if they think that they could tell me what a zoologist is (I will ask until I get the correct answer). I will tell the students that we will be learning about a process that zoologist use to name and organize animals called classification. c) Content I will ask the students to take out their textbooks Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and open to page two under the heading Classification. There are nine paragraphs; I will have one child read each paragraph. I will then tell the students that we are going to be practicing classification by completing the worksheet. I will have a volunteer hand the sheets out to the class. d) Evaluation I will evaluate the students based on their accurate complete of the worksheet. e) Closure As the lesson draws to a close I will tell the students that they must finish the worksheet for homework. I will also tell them that for the next class they are going to be learning about something called binomial nomenclature and they are to look up the scientific name for a grizzly bear, elephant, and their favourite animal because we will be doing an activity with those names.

What is Zoology? Lesson 3 I. A) Subject: Science C) Topic: Binomial Nomenclature B) Grade: 4/5 D) Date: September 14, 2011

II.

Objectives: Students will be able to name the seen levels of the taxonomy classification system. Students will produce a mnemonic to help them remember the order of the taxonomy classification system. Students will explain what they know about taxonomy and binomial nomenclature in their journals. Students will complete any unfinished work for homework. Board Work/ Supplementary Materials Various binomial nomenclature names from their homework Taxonomy Handout (12) Zoology Handout (12) Procedure a) Drill/ Review of Previously Learned Material

IV.

I will begin the class by asking the students if they call tell me what we learned about last class. Next I will ask the students if they can tell me what classification is and what the specific name for the type of classification is that we learned about last class. b) Set Induction I will tell the students to bring out their homework from last night (the Latin names I asked them to find last night). I will ask them first the binomial nomenclature for the Grizzly Bear, then the Elephant, and then I will ask the students to tell me the binomial nomenclature for their favourite animals. c) Content I will ask the students to take out their textbooks Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and open to page four under the heading Latin. As a class we will read both paragraphs under the Latin heading and the first paragraph under the Binomial Nomenclature heading. I will tell the students that we will be making original mnemonics to help us remember the seven levels of taxonomy. I will show the students the mnemonic that I learned when I was in

school and still remember, I will also show them the example from the textbook. I will ask for a volunteer to hand the Taxonomy Worksheets to the members of the class. The students will have approximately 10- 15 minutes to finish this activity. Next I will ask for a volunteer to hand out the Zoology Worksheet. I will tell the students that the worksheet reviews everything we have learnt about zoology so far. They are to try to answer the questions without using the textbook or their notes, but if they have trouble they can look in either book to get the answers or raise their hand and ask for help. d) Evaluation I will evaluate the students based on the completion of their mnemonics and Zoology Worksheets. e) Closure As the lesson draws to a close I will tell the students that if they have not finished either or both assignments (their mnemonics or Zoology Worksheets) they are expected to finish them for homework to be passed in for the next class.

What is Zoology? Lesson 4 I. A) Subject: Science C) Topic: Habitats/ Biomes B) Grade: 4/5 D) Date: September 19, 2011

II.

Objectives: Students will be able to define the words habitat and biome Students will be able to name and draw the five biomes (Aquatic, Desert, Forest, Grasslands, and Tundra). Students will complete and unfinished work for homework Board Work/ Supplementary Materials Biome Sheets (12 of each biome- 60) Large Blank Biomes (30 Sheets for Bulletin Board) Scissors, Pencil Crayons, Markers, Crayons Bulletin Board with Biomes, Aquatic, Desert, Grasslands, Tundra, and Forest Procedure a) Drill/ Review of Previously Learned Material

III.

IV.

I will ask the students if they remember what we learned about in Science class last week (classification, taxonomy, binomial nomenclature, zoology, zoologists). b) Set Induction I will ask the students if they know what a habitat is. I will ask students to contribute until I have an answer similar to the place animals live. c) Content I will ask the students to take out their textbooks Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and open to page twelve under the heading Habitats. We will read the four paragraphs as a class. I will tell the students that scientists often classify habitats just like they classify animals and we are going to learn about biomes (the largest category in habitat classification). I will tell the students that there are 5 biomes: Aquatic, Desert, Forest, Grasslands, and Tundra. I will have a volunteer hand out the 5 Biome Sheets and the 2 Large Blank Biome Sheets. I will ask the students to get out the Aquatic Biome Sheet first (Then Desert, Forest, Grassland, and finally Tundra). We will read the information about each biome. Once we are

done reading the information the students will be given time to re-create what each biome would look like. Once they are done colouring their 5 Biomes Sheets they are supposed to colour the two blank sheets to look like their two favourite biomes for our classroom bulletin board. If they finish their favourite biomes in class then we will put them up in class. d) Evaluation I will evaluate the students based on their accurate depiction of the five biomes. e) Closure As the lesson comes to a close I will tell the students that they have five minutes to finish their biomes. I will tell the students that they are supposed to finish all of their assignments (5 biomes, and the 2 favourite biomes) for homework before the next class.

What is Zoology? Lesson 5 I. A) Subject: Science C) Topic: Instinct/ Game B) Grade: 4/5 D) Date: September 20, 2011

Objectives: Students will participate is an educational game while demonstrating their knowledge of the five biomes. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of animal instinct Board Work/ Supplementary Materials Envelopes/ Baggies with different Biome Titles set up around the room (5) Set of Animals marked and colour coordinated for each student (12 sets of 20 animals) Procedure a) Drill/ Review of Previously Learned Material

III.

IV.

I will ask the students who can tell me what they learned about last class (biomes), I will then ask if someone can tell me the five different biomes. b) Set Induction I will tell the students that in a few minutes we are going to be playing a game to help us remember and demonstrate their knowledge of the five biomes. But first we have to read one page from the textbook. c) Content I will ask the students to take out their textbooks Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and open to page fourteen under the heading Instinct. We will read all three paragraphs as a class (excluding the quote at the top of the page). When we are finished reading I will tell the students to put away their textbooks and clean their desks off for the game. The object of the game is to place all of the animals in their proper biomes one at a time. There are 5 biomes placed throughout the room, everyone has 20 different animals (4 animals for each biome) marked with a different colour for each student.

When I say go they can take their animals one by one and find the biome they belong in. When they have placed all of their animals in the proper biome then they can return to their seat and wait patiently for the rest of the students to finish. d) Evaluation I will evaluate the students based on their placement of the animals in the biomes. e) Closure I will tell the students when they only have a few minutes left to finish up with the game. There will be no homework for today!
