818 Temperature controller

The 818 controller is a truly flexible, advanced technology controller which combines simplicity of operation with powerful control performance. All the high level functions of the controller may be configured either from the front panel or via the communications interface whilst the addition of hardware options is achieved by plug-in modules. The 818 has a clear vacuum fluorescent display in which the total instrument status is indicated. Coupled with powerful control software this gives the operator and engineer alike the ability to optimise process performance. Since its launch over 100,000 units have been successfully installed worldwide. Accuracy - The 818 has a low level I/P Analogue to Digital Converter which is continuously corrected for drift. Operating at a speed of 8 updates per second this gives very high stability and rapid response to process changes. All linearisations for the numerous sensors, which are included as standard in the controller, are digitally calculated to add high accuracy to the other attributes of this unit. Communications - Two types of communications are available with the 818 controller: 1) Digital communications via an RS232 or RS422/485 interface link using the industrial standard ANSI-X3.28 protocol bi-synch. This allows all the parameters of the controller to be monitored or changed by a computer or PLC. Using the RS422/485 standard up to 100 controllers may be networked on a single link. The Baud rate may be set from 300 to 9600. 2) Analogue communications provides retransmission of various selected parameters such as Process variable and Setpoint. Also Analogue communication provides the facility to remotely vary selected parameters such as Setpoint and Maximum power, by means of a dc signal. Tuning - All versions of the 818 controller offer two separate PID loop tuning algorithms (Auto Tuning and Adaptive Tuning ) which automate the tedious part of the commissioning routine. The two algorithms may be used either separately or together depending upon process needs. When the tuning algorithms are used together with the Valve Positioner output the 818 makes use of an internal mathematical model of the motor being used in order to tune correctly even where there is backlash or valve asymmetry. Self Tune - The self-tuning algorithm is a one-shot tuner which may be manually initiated at any time, in order to retune for a new set of process conditions. When tuning to a new setpoint, the self-tuner analyses the start up response to give an estimate of the process with an on-off sequence, which determines the natural response of the process so that new control parameters can be calculated and the Proportional, Integral and Deriviative terms set automatically. Adaptive Tune - The adaptive-tuning algorithm is designed to run continuously, in the background, while normal PID control is taking place. The algorithm, is activated when load disturbances cause deviations from setpoint, in excess of a predefined trigger point. The algorithm then proceeds to analyse the closed loop response, while the process value recovers from the initial disturbance and applies expert rules to retune the loop. If this loop is already well tuned, no action is taken.
