Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Volume of Pyramids Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

d be able to calculate the volume of a square based pyramid Most students should be able to calculate the volume of a compound shape involving a square based pyramid. Some students should be able to calculate the volume of a frustrum. Keywords: Convergent, Square Based Pyramid, Pyramid, Prism Learning Activities Starter/Introduction The starter reviews calculating the volume of a prism by setting up an equation from the two shapes and solving it to determine the height of the cylinder. Students could work in pairs on a single mini-whiteboard. Emphasis should be place on deriving the two volumes rather than solving the equation. Therefore, the height could be stated in terms of pi rather than evaluating it on a calculator. Development To introduce the concept of convergent shapes it is useful to place a pyramid or some sort amongst a group of prisms and have the students decide which the odd one is out and why. Ideally, the class use their powers of intuition with a little guidance from the teacher to define a convergent shape rather than simply being told. Use the proof of formulae YouTube video to derive the volume of a pyramid. Once derived, the formula can be applied to model the first two problems on the second slide. By this point the class should be able to attempt the third problem independently on mini-whiteboards for teacher assessment. The problems on the third slide could be attempted independently with the students carefully sketching the diagrams and showing clear working adjacent. Encourage students to simplify the calculation as far as possible using mental methods. Plenary By this point in the lesson the class should have a secure understanding of compound shapes involving pyramids. A frustum is simply a natural extension to this concept. The class may need to work in pairs or small groups in order to develop a strategy. Students could work on miniwhiteboards to help them sketch the diagram and present their attempt to the teacher for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could derive the formula themselves as homework to prepare for the lesson. Students could be given the volume and challenged to find an alternative dimension. Less Able Students may need to be given simple integer dimensions and progress onto compound shapes next lesson. Resources: Proof of formulae Mini-whiteboards Calculator
