In August 2003, we were selected as the sole provider for ADM services to a major semiconductor company in the US.

As part of our engagement, we started on a transition process, taking over application support from the clients employees. This was a daunting task because of the complexity of applications and the diversity of technologies. As we were making steady progress in the transition, a surprise was around the corner. The client had decided to demerge their SPS business unit into a separate

semiconductor company.

What did this mean for us? The demerger was going to impact IT systems directly. New systems had to be implemented on an aggressive timeline even as we needed to replicate some and retire others. While we focused on the transition, we were also expected to contribute significantly to IT-related demerger activities. We had to make quick and aggressive changes to our transition schedule i.e. to pull-in transition waves to fall in line with demerger timelines. This was a real test of our agility our ability to ramp-up as well as the flexibility of our planning process.

How did we fare? Judge from the award the client gave us that year. We were declared an Outstanding partner for successful transition.

We are a dependable partner for our clients. They know they can rely on us to go the distance (quite literally, in one case where our consultants worked in Angola, Nigeria, Kazakhstan and Argentina on a global SAP roll-out for a global energy major). Regardless of circumstances, our clients know that we will not let them down. For the same energy company, weve provided uninterrupted support in the face of natural calamities. We have rapidly ramped up in response to increased demand and when an insurance client wanted all vendors to scale the engagement level down, we also reduced team size just as efficiently. Our clients know we put their needs first and measure our success by theirs.

We believe innovation should be more than a buzzword. It should be an all-pervasive way of life that delivers tangible results. The Enterprise Business Solution (EBS) Innovation lab we have created for Chevron is an example of innovation in action. The purpose of this lab is to showcase current and future technical capabilities. We test innovative ideas with business value for our client, prototype solutions to reduce implementation risk and validate improved performance and business cases. Many cutting-edge, exciting ideas have been generated from the lab and we are working on developing proof-of-concepts for them.

Integrity is part of our groups DNA. All companies under the L&T umbrella operate with complete transparency and the highest ethical standards we know no other way. Integrity is best demonstrated during trying times. A client decided to consolidate the number of vendors it had and the outsourcing engagement was taken from us and given to another organization. Our teams had in-depth knowledge of the clients enterprise system landscape and we were asked to pass this on to the new vendor. Putting the clients needs before ours, we developed a robust knowledge transfer process that ensured there was minimum business disruption. The handover was effected smoothly, without any hiccups.

Our teams have demonstrated their passion and commitment time and again. For instance, we worked on a project to develop multimedia components for Windows mobile-based reference platform for a global media company. This was a massive project from start to commercialization and there were many challenges along the way. Our team worked under tremendous pressure to meet the tight deadline of 18 months. They proved that when you are driven by

Shankar joined L&T Infotech as a software engineer trainee. Soon, he realized that his interests and skill set were better suited to customer and businessrelated functions rather than a pure technical function. He talked to his seniors about this and keeping in mind his hard work and commitment, they encouraged him to apply for PACE (Program for Account Management Excellence), an initiative within the company to identify and train account managers. Hundreds of engineers across the company applied, and the final selection was done after rigorous rounds of tests and interviews. Shankar was selected for the program and today, he is a senior business development executive for an important customer account. Meritocracy and fair-play drive all decisions about people management at L&T Infotech. We recognize that it is our people who deliver the solutions our clients seek from us. We strive to give them opportunities that will help them grow both professionally and personally.

Together, we are stronger, smarter and more effective. Respect for each other and teamwork has played a big part in our success. For instance, implementing CMM Level 5 processes successfully across the company is no easy task. A team was handpicked across BUs to make this happen and code named T15 (Team of 15). T15 worked with the leadership team of each BU to carry out a gap analysis, define new processes, train BU members and implement processes. The whole process was overseen by a Steering Committee. This journey required the T15 members to be aligned to the goal set by the BU, while the BU members needed to understand and follow the new processes. A huge amount of co-ordination was called for and all teams worked as one to overcome the challenges. In just six months, we were ready to go for the CMM assessment.
