a) A velocity profile of a flowing fluid over a flat plate is parabolic and given by u=ay2 +by +c Where a,b and c are constants. The velocity of fluid is 1.2 m/s at 20 cm from the plate which the vertex point of the velocity distribution. Find out the velocity gradients and shear stresses at y = 0,10 and 20 cm respectively. Take =8 poise for the flowing fluid. b) State and prove the Pascals Law. What do you understand by vacuum pressure?

a) Define total hydrostatic force and centre of pressure and find an expressions for both when the surface is vertically immersed. b) A tank section is made of half-circle of 1 m diameter. Find out the total pressure acting on this half circle if it is filled with water.

a) The flow field is given by = x 3 y. Check whether the given field exists or not? Further check whether it is irrotational? b) Differentiate between tangential and normal acceleration and find out the expressions for both.

a) Develop Eulers equation of motion and then derive Bernoullis equation and list out some practical applications. What are the limitations of Bernoullis equation? b) A pipe of 30 cm diameter carrying 0.25 m3/s water. The pipe is bent by 1350 from the horizontal anti-clockwise. The pressure of water flowing through the pipe is 400 kN. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the bend.

a) Explain the characteristics of laminar and turbulent boundary layers. b) Calculate the total drag, shear drag and the pressure drag exerted on 1 m length of an infinite circular cylinder which has a diameter equal to 3 cm, air of density 0.126 msl/m3 flowing past the cylinder with velocity 3.6 m per minute. Take total drag coefficient equal to 1.4 and shear drag coefficient equal to 0.185.

a) What do you understand by Reynolds number ? Mention its significance in fluid mechanics. b) An oil is flowing between two parallel plates kept at 10 cm apart with maximum velocity of 1.5 m/s. Find out the discharge per meter width (perpendicular to paper), shear stress at the plates; the pressure difference between two points 20 m apart along the flow direction. Also find out the velocity gradient at the plates and velocity at 2 cm from the plate surface. Take (for oil) = 25 poise.

a) What do you understand by TEL and HGL? Explain their importance in the piping design. b) A pipe of 40 cm diameter carries an oil 450 liters/sec. If the pipe length is 100 m, find the head loss due to friction. Take =0.45 stokes for the oil.

a) A rectangular notch of crest width 40 cm is used to measure the discharge in a rectangular channel of 60 cm wide and 45cm deep. If head over the crest is 20 cm find the discharge. Take Cd=0.62 b) A rectangular orifice of 2 m breadth and 1m height is provided between two tanks. The water level on the side of the orifice is 4 m above its top and on the other side is 0.5 m below its top. Find the discharge through the orifice if Cd=0.65.

Determine the pressure force acting on it and location of centre of pressure both vertically and laterally.

a) The momentum equation of the fluid flow is obtained by using Newtons second law of motion then prove that Fx = Q( V2 x V1x ) and F = Q[ V V ] b) A converging pipe of 30 cm and 15 cm diameter carrying water is positioned inclined whose inlet and outlet are at 6 m and 1 m above the datum. The pressure at inlet is 1.5 bar and velocity is 5 m/s. Find the pressure of water at the outlet of the pipe. Neglect the losses.

a) What are the factors affecting the boundary layer thickness? b) A semi-tubular cylinder of 7.5 cm radius with concave side upstream (drag coefficient =2.3) is submerged in flowing water of velocity 60 cm/sec. If the cylinder is 7.2 m long, calculate the drag. Assume density of water as 102 msl/m3.

The loss of pressure head measured in 3.2 m. Take f =0.008. Find out the rate of flow through the pipe.

a) A sharp- crested weir is 1 m high and provided to a rectangular channel of 6 m wide. The discharge measured by the weir is 3m3/s. Find the depth of the water upstream of the weir. Take Cd=0.62 b) A venturimeter 30 cm 10 cm is used for measuring the discharge of oil (sp.gr=0.85) passing through a vertical pipe in upward direction. The difference between entrance and throat section of the venture is 40 cm. The head recorded by mercury manometer is 20 cm. Find the discharge and pressure difference between the entrance and throat section. Take Cd=0.97.

a) A space between two square plate (50 cm 50 cm) is filled with oil of 1cm thickness. The upper plate moves with constant velocity of 2.5 m/s under a force 10 N. Determine the dynamic and kinematic viscosities of the oil in poise and stokes respectively. b) A simple U-tube manometer using mercury is used to measure the vacuum pressure of an oil flowing through a pipe. Find the vacuum pressure of the oil in the pipe if mercury level difference in U- tube is 20 cm. The height of oil in the left limb from the centre of the pipe is 15cm below.

a) A triangular gate of base 1.5 m and height 2 m lies in vertical plane. The vertex is 1 m below the surface of the tank. The tank is full of oil whose specific gravity is 0.8. Find the total force exerted on the gate and position of centre of pressure. b) A tank section is made of half-circle of 1 m diameter. Find out the total pressure acting on this half circle if it is filled with water.

The water level on the side of the orifice is 4m above its top and on the other side is 0.5 m below its top. Find the discharge through the orifice if Cd=0.65.

a) In a stream of glycerine in motion, at a certain point, the velocity gradient is 20 cm/sec. Calculate the shear stress at that point. For glylcerine take = 1280kg / m 3 and = 8 stokes. b) A single column micrometer is connected to a pipe containing oil (S = 09) . The area of reservoir is 80 times the area of tube. The reservoir contains mercury. Initially, the level of mercury in the reservoir is 30 cm below the centre of pipe. The difference in mercury level in the reservoir and tube is 50 cm. Find the pressure of the oil passing through pipe.

a) A vertical shutter revolving about horizontal axis sustains a pressure of 4m of water on one side. At what depth should the axis be placed in order that the pressure force on the portion of the shutter above and below the axis may be equal? b) An isosceles triangle of 4 m base and 6m height is located vertically in the water whose height is parallel to free surface of water and its vertical height from free surface of water is 8 m. Determine the pressure force acting on it and location of centre of pressure both vertically and laterally.

a) The following given stream function represents a two-dimensional steady state flow.

6. Methanol is produced by the reaction of CO with H2 according to the equation . CO + 2H2 CH3 OH Only 15% of the CO entering the reactor is converted to methanol. 4. Acetone is used as a solvent in a certain process. Recovery of the acetone is accomplished by evaporation in to a stream of N2 followed by cooling and compression of the nal gas mixture. In the solvent recovery unit 5000 kg of acetone are removed per hour. The N2 is admitted at 380 C and 750 mm Hg. Partial pressure of acetone in incoming nitrogen is 10 mm Hg.
