LESSON PLANNING TEMPLATE

Name Colbi Fair Grade level 1st Observation: 1 2 3 4

Long-term specific goal(s) for LESSON: Students will have an understanding of the Earths structure. 1. Title of Research Lesson: Inside our planet: The Four Layers of our Earth

2. Short-term specific goal(s) for lesson: Students will refine their knowledge on the Earths four layers, as well as learn about the Mantles two layers.

3. Standards addressed: Kindergarten ISBE Science Standard- 12.E.1a Identify components and describe diverse features of the Earths land, water and atmospheric systems.

4. Background of the Lesson: The students have been learning about the Solar System for about two weeks now. They have been focusing more on the
Moon, the Sun and Earth. They know the Earths layers by name, but havent had many visuals on some parts that make up the layers (mantles layers). I am going to have the students work on worksheets about the Earths four layers, coloring, cutting and pasting, and then with graham crackers and pudding create models for the mantels two layers: lava and its rocky shell.

1. Introduction- I will have kindergartners sit at the tables in the room and talk to them about what I will be teaching them.

So since you are all learning about the Solar System, I want to hear some volunteers tell me what the nine planets are. Dont worry they dont have to be in order. A.S.R.- Venus, Neptune, Mars, Earth, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto, Mercury, sun, moon. Great Job! Each and every one of us knows that we will on planet Earth right? So that means we should know some facts about the planet we live one. Today we are going to be learning more about the Earths four layers. Can you all remember what they are called? A.S.R.- mantel, inner core, lava, outer core, crust. Great! So first we are going to be working on a worksheet that tells you all about the layers of the earth. You all will have an earth layer packet to complete. First write you name on the front of the packet so I can see whose wonderful work it is. You may also color your Earth one you finish you earth layers. Next, we are going to read a passage together about the earth layers, and you have to write the names of the layers that are pointing to a space in the picture. Then you are going to color the layers of the Earth,

2. Worksheet Explanation- I will explain the instructions for the worksheets before I hand them out to the students.

6. Evaluation:
(How will you know whether or not you have achieved your short-term specific goals? What did the childrens responses to this lesson tell you about whether your goals were met? The students have achieved my short-term specific goal if they correctly distributed the personalities of the two characters under the right categories on the Venn diagram. Also students will be evaluated more formally with determining whether punctuation and grammar is appropriate, by reading their worksheets.

7. Post Lesson Reflection:

Absolutely nothing. This lesson went extremely well and I am very proud of the outcome. It was well thought out and focused on something that the students already knew, and refined their knowledge and understanding on it. I wouldnt change the materials, or the delivery because every one was focused on the task and understood what was expected of them.

What would you change about this lesson and why would those changes improve it?

How did your organization and materials affect the success of the lesson? What were some challenges with this lesson? What surprised you?

All materials were set up before hand, were made to make sure that students understood the placement of the earth layers, and even gave them a visual on what one of the layers look like. They are used to just looking at books or writing about the new concept, but having materials to create your own engaged them more in the lesson. I was very surprised with how long the students remained attentive and engaged in the lesson. Usually students that age attention spans are short, but this lesson gave me the complete opposite perspective.
