Wekiva Elementary School Where Koality Education Happens Every Day! 1450 East Wekiva Trail Longwood, Florida 32779 Phone: 746-3150 Fax: 746-3163 April 2013 Principal: Marjorie Adamczyk Assistant Principal: Jeff Fose Principals Message The first Dads Day Breakfast was bigger than we expected but we could not be happier! I met many dads who want to be active at Wekiva. Thank you to Mr. Philson, who spoke about how he volunteers at school and to Mr. Kozak, our PTA legislature chair, who shared how helping the PTA gives back to the school. He told approximately 70 or more dads that we need someone to take this position for next year on the PTA board. Our PTA president, Mrs. Romine also shared that PTA always can use help before, during, and after events at school. Dads learned from their child(ren) what it means to be a shoulder partner at school. A brochure was shared listing numerous ways to help at school and instructions to register as a Dividend. We are hoping to see LOTS of Super Pops on campus in the near future. The Family Dinner and Art Show was so much fun. From the helicopter, games, bounce houses, and dancing with Coach Prose, to a huge dinner and bite size dessert inside, everyone had a blast! Students shared their art work with their parents as well. From color wheels and ink printing, to pastel still life, the walls were filled with art expressionism. The Book Fair was open as well to allow parents to shop for reading materials. I want to thank everyone who helped to make this evening so much fun for our students! Kindergarten Registration is Wednesday, May 1st from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. From 4:00 5:00, we will be welcoming our new families to Wekiva from Forest City. All proceeds from this walk-a-thon will be used to renew our annual online site licenses and to purchase Mimio Interactive Whiteboards for classrooms. The funds we raise this year are even more necessary due to cut-backs in our school funding during these tight economic times. Please remember to turn in your pledges to your childs teacher. If you have a business or know a business that would like to make a contribution to Trek for Tech, please contact, Karyn Cook, at 407-7463151. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for supporting technology at our school! Media Center The Spring Book Fair was a great success! With the money we earned from your purchases and All for Books donations, we were able to get nearly 300 new books for the Media Center! Wed like to thank all the parents and teachers who volunteered their time to help us out. Were especially grateful to Bonnie Khan, Lynne Haas, Lisa Shinneman and Terri Laudner for their assistance and commitment to this beneficial event. Our students bought new books to read and the media center expanded its collection. It was a win-win for everyone! Thank you! Wekiva's Food Pantry is full. Parents CANNOT park or double-park and cross car line traffic to pick up students to avoid the car line. Please do not park your car and come to the car ramp seating area to pick up your child. If you do, you will be asked to go to the front office, provide ID and share the code to pick up your children, only to return back to the car ramp to find your child. This will take longer than staying in the car line. If you are coming from the Sweetwater area, you CANNOT turn left on to Holderness from E Wekiva Trail. If you are coming from behind the school on Holderness you CANNOT turn right. If you park across the street, you will receive a ticket from the Seminole County Sheriffs department. Parents must come into the school office to sign-in your tardy child. Tardy students CANNOT be dropped off in the bus lane or the car ramp. If you need to pick up your child early you must do it before 2:30 (1:30 on Wednesday.). We will not release students after this time. Please do not be angry at the staff for providing the safety and security of ALL Wekiva students. If you have a concern, please feel free to contact administration to discuss. The Counselors Corner As the school year is coming to a close, I wanted to share some thoughts with our families. It is important for your child to continue to learn over the summer. To encourage reading, you may sometimes select books above your childs reading level, but of high interest. Then, you can have fun sharing the book. Practice math facts. There are many fun, and free, math activities on line. If you travel, talk about the geography and history of the area, and items of cultural or scientific interest. There are many interesting places close to us. The library has childrens guides to Florida. Help your child take pictures with a digital camera. Those pictures could even be used in writing a story about your trip or summer activities. The Guidance Department is here to help you and your family. Some responsibilities are: ***Family support- Transition to new schools, including middle school, parenting and behavior support, family resources-academic, financial/ medical/counseling ***Student support-making friends, how to get along with peers, individual counseling, small group counseling, problem-solving skills, character development ***Class lessons-friends, respect, honesty, fairness, caring, courage, gratitude, generosity ***Management of IEPs and services, academic interventions, Gifted screening/evaluations Here are some strategies for character development to consider: ***Keep your children busy in positive activities. Children and youth have remarkable energy levels, and the challenge is to channel that energy into positive activities. Such activities promote altruism, caring and cooperation and also give children a sense of accomplishment. ***Plan as many family activities as possible, including family meals together without television. ***Involve your children in the planning. Family activities that seem quite ordinary at the moment are often viewed in retrospect as very special and memorable bits of family history. Seminole County Public Schools www.scps.k12.fl.us or www.wekivaelementary.com ***The old adage of Do what I say and not what I do is a myth. Children learn best from watching and listening to their role models. Provide them with positive actions and words. ***Set clear expectations for your children and hold them accountable for their actions. Be consistent in your expectations and in the consequences for poor actionsreward positive actions. ***Defining and enforcing reasonable limits establishes the parents as the moral leaders in the home and provides a sense of security to children and youth. It also lets them know that you care enough about them to want them to be people of good character. ***Learn to say no and mean it. It is natural for children to test the limits and challenge their parent's authority. Despite the child's protests, a parent's most loving act is often to stand firm and prohibit the child's participation in a potentially hurtful activity. ***Remember that you are the adult! Children don't need another buddy, but they desperately need a parent who cares enough to set and enforce appropriate limits for their behavior. These ideas were excerpted from Dr. Helen LeGette's new book, Parents, Kid and Character: 21 Strategies to Help Your Children Develop Good Character. Character Development Publishing. I hope you all have an exceptionally fun and safe summer! Enjoy your family time!
