H hook or size needed Ior gauge.
Stitches Used: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr
Ch 4; join with slip st to Iorm ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join with slip st in 3rd ch oI begin-
ning ch 3. Sl st loosely into next stitch.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, sl st in same st. (Hdc, sl st) in each dc around.
Hold on just a moment beIore joining to Iirst stitch oI the
round. This is the only weird part oI the pattern, I promise!
Now, peek over the top edge oI the little circle you're holding.
See the loose curved strand at the back oI each oI the (hdc, sl st)
groups you just made? Good. That's the loops we'll be using in
the next round. Now, on the Iirst group, the strand isn't so loose
or curved, but there's a vertical strand back there that's almost
the same as the rest. See it? Great! Now join with sl st in that
stitch. Big sigh oI relieI - it's all downhill Irom here!
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch1), (hdc in curved strand behind
next stitch group, ch1) in each group around. Join with sl st to
2nd ch oI beginning ch 3. Sl st loosely into next ch 1 sp. (16
hdc, 16 ch 1 sps.)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc in next hdc, dc in next sp, dc in
next hdc, (2dc in next sp, dc in next hdc, dc in next sp, dc in
next hdc) 7 times. Join with sl st to 3rd ch oI beginning ch 3.
(40 dc)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, sl st in same st. (Hdc, sl st) in each dc around.
Join with sl st in vertical strand at back oI Iirst group, just as we
did at the end oI Round 2.

Rnd 6: In this round, you will be working one stitch in each oI
the curved back strands oI the groups on Round 5. Even at cor-
ners, there will only be one stitch in each oI those strands. Each
grouping in parentheses goes in the next curved strand oI
Round 5.
Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch1), (hdc, ch1), (dc, ch1), (dc, ch1), (tr,
ch1). *(tr, ch3) (corner made), (tr, ch1), (tr, ch1), (dc, ch1), (dc,
ch1), (hdc, ch1), (hdc, ch1), (dc, ch1), (dc, ch1), (tr, ch1). Re-
peat Irom * two times. (Tr, ch3) (last corner made), (tr, ch1),
(tr, ch1), (dc, ch1), (dc, ch1). Join with sl st to 2nd ch oI begin-
ning ch3. (10 stitches and 9 ch1 spaces between corner ch3
spaces)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st and ch 1 space, with 3
sc in each corner ch 3 space. Join with sl st in Iirst sc.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in each sc, with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each cor-
ner sc. Join with sl st to top oI beginning ch 3. (25 dc per side)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each dc, with 3 sc in each cor-
ner ch 2 space. Join with sl st in Iirst sc.
Rnd 10: (Note: watch the corners on this round. They're diIIer-
ent Irom the other rows.) Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1). ((Dc, ch 1)
in next dc, skip next dc) 7 times. Dc in next dc. *(Dc, ch 2, dc)
in corner sc. ((Dc in next dc, ch 1), skip next dc) 13 times. Dc
in next dc. Repeat Irom * two times. (Dc, ch 2, dc) in corner sc,
((Dc, ch 1) in next dc, skip next dc) 5 times. Join with sl st to
3rd ch oI beginning ch 4. (13 ch 1 spaces per side)
Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in each dc and ch 1 sp, with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
in each corner ch 2 space. Join with sl st to top oI beginning ch
3. (33 dc per side)
Rnd 12: Repeat Rnd 11. (37 dc per side)

other round oI dc with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) corners. II square
