Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to: (D) identify and sort words into conceptual categories (e.g., opposites) ELPS: 4f Use visual and contextual support and support from peers and teachers to read grade-appropriate content area text, enhance and confirm understanding, and develop vocabulary, grasp of language structures, and background knowledge needed to comprehend increasingly challenging language Objectives: The learner will be able to identify antonyms for a list of words. Rationale: Professional: According to cognitive theorists, students maintain new concepts and skills in long-term memory more readily when they are presented with engaging images that relate to the information being taught. (Slavin 192-193) Learner-Centered: In this lesson, students will be taught to identify antonyms, which will enable them to build vocabulary, and gain better understanding of the language skills needed to compare and contrast. Prerequisite Skills: Students need to be able to read basic vocabulary words. Assessment: Informal- The teacher will walk around the room during the activities and observe student participation and response to assess understanding. Formal Students will be asked to provide their own antonyms for words that they choose from a word bank. Materials/Set-up: Cards printed with a word and corresponding picture on one side and its antonym on the other; computer and screen for PowerPoint presentation illustrating antonyms; Bingo sheets and chips for antonym Bingo game; folding cards printed with words and their antonyms for matching activity; antonym handouts Sponge/Transition Activity: After showing the class the cards printed with words and their opposites, the teacher will transition to the lesson with a PowerPoint presentation on antonyms. Focus: The teacher will introduce the concept of antonyms by showing a series of cards that illustrate words and their opposites, and then asking students if if they can identify what trait all the cards have in common. The teacher will then explain that the term for opposites is antonyms. (3 min) Connections: By gaining an understanding of antonyms, students will be able to use contrast and describe objects in speech and writing. Instruction: 1) Focus (3 min) 2) Show PowerPoint slides demonstrating the concept of antonyms and discuss different examples of several antonyms. After modeling several examples, ask for volunteers to provide the last few examples. (7 min) 3) Explain rules for Bingo activity; hand out materials. As the

students play the game, walk around the room to assess student participation and understanding. Provide assistance as needed.(10 min) 4) Provide explanation for activity, then hand out materials. Students will match words with their antonyms, then paste the antonyms in the correct place on their cards. (7 min) 5) Briefly review that antonyms are opposites; have students synthesize what they have learned by coming up with their own antonyms. (5 min) Closure: Students will be asked to come up with their own examples of antonyms using a blank worksheet and a word bank. Tell students to try to think of their own words, but they may use the word bank if necessary. (5 min) Accommodations: For students who read below grade level, pictures will accompany each of the words for the Bingo activity.
