As the students begin to gather at the rug, tell them we will play a quick game of guess who. Begin by saying, I am a man or a woman who wears a protective uniform

to keep me safe from heat. I help the community by traveling in my big red truck when people need me, and I am brave when I have to go into houses to save people and animals. Who am I? Wait for the children to guess what community worker you are describing. If no one is able to guess, add more clues, for example I am not afraid to be near a fire! Once the children guess firefighter, praise the children for doing a great job and tell them we will be talking about firefighters today. 2) Whole-Group Brainstorm (5-6 minutes): Tell the children that before we do some fun firefighter activities, we first need to talk about what we already know about firefighters. Ask the children to quietly raise their hands and talk about what they know about firefighters. For example: what firefighters wear, who can be a firefighter, has anyone ever met a firefighter, what do firefighters do, how do firefighters help our community, etc. Write down the childrens responses on the chart paper. Next, have the children stand up to do a quick game in order to transition them into their seats for the next activity. 3) Firefighter Says Game (2-3 minutes): Have the students stand up and play a quick game of Firefighter Says to get their wiggles out before the next activity. - Climb the ladder (make fists above their head, raise one arm at a time while marching) - Squirt the water (make a hose out of one hand and pretend to be squirting water) - Stop, drop, and roll - Sound the siren (make a sound like a fire engine siren) - Drive the fire truck (put hands out as if turning a steering wheel) OR Barney Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLV9IA6gYW0)

3) Online Interactive Read Aloud and Discussion (5-7 minutes): Once all of the students are seated, tell them we are going to watch a short video about fire fighters. Tell the students there are songs in the video, and they can sing along with the characters! After the video, ask the students to turn to a partner and talk about something they learned. Then, as a whole group, discuss what they saw in the video. (Touch on vocabulary such as: ladder, hose, siren, etc. as well as the sequence of events). Tape the chart paper where you recorded the childrens knowledge before the video on the whiteboard to compare what they knew and what they learned after the video. After the discussion, students will work on a firefighter activity at their seats. 7) Sequencing Activity (4-5 minutes): Hand out the sequencing activity. Explain to the students that they will cut out the pictures, and put them in order from what would happen first to what would happen last. If some students finish early, have a firefighter worksheet for them to complete while the others finish up. 8) Summary

Have the students put their finished work in their community portfolio in the firefighter folder. Explain to children that if we didnt have firefighters, our community would not be complete. They help us stay safe and protect us when things go wrong.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION: I will know if my students comprehended the objectives if they are able to verbalize their knowledge about firefighters during the class discussion as well as after the video. I will also know if my students comprehended the objectives if they are able to use their knowledge of fires and firefighters to put the picture cards in the correct order. Overall, I will know that my students obtained the objective if they can state how firefighters help our community.
