Evaluation three.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback? To receive feedback on my music video I decided to create a questionnaire for other peers to fill out in their free time. I gathered my sample of people to fill out my questionnaire from the school common room and handed out the questionnaire at lunch time to whoever was available at the time, enabling me to gather a lot of information in a short amount of time. I decided to use this group of youths as they fit into the category of my target audience for who my music video is targeted at, therefore I played the video to a group of 16-18 year olds then asked them to complete my questionnaire alone so that they did not copy anyone elses answers, gaining a true understanding of the audience opinions of my video. I especially targeted other media students to complete my questionnaire as they could give me detailed criticisms on how I could improve my video, with their high quality media knowledge this could give me a thorough understanding on where I could improve my work. I randomly handed out my questionnaire and got 5 boy and 5 girls to watch the video and complete the questionnaire, although this is a small sample it is big enough to be able to compare information and see if any of the comments are similar, without it taking up too much time.

How much did you enjoy the music video? This is the first question to the questionnaire, straight away asking whether they liked the video all the way from the start to the end. Here I added a number of lines for the participant to add any comments they feel I necessary to write about their views on the music video, and which part of the video they specifically enjoyed. This question is fairly general however I wanted an instant answer whether they had a positive or negative overall view on the music video. This question has also been used because my artist is unsigned, and therefore unknown to the audience who are unsure of the genre of the artist until they have heard his song (fun), therefore I can see whether it suits the particular participants style in music, or if it is not their usual choice in music, whether they liked it still. If this does happen, this means that my product is successful in promoting new audiences and to be able to sell the product to as many people in a wider audience. What part of the video did you enjoy most? This question enabled the audience to specifically write which part of the music video they liked overall, this would therefore link into Gunther Kresss theory that music genre is conducted from a structure of frequently repeated occasion and whether this would affect whether the audience found something interesting or too predictable. Me and Laura added many different shots that were very similar to one another, so we wanted to see whether there was one particular part of the video/shot that they remembered most of all. This could also link to Katz and Blumlers theory The uses and gratifications that they watch our music video to gain certain behaviour from the media text. In this case, the audience could connect to the music video through personal identity, for example if they enjoy the storyline of the video this means they could relate to the music video to their own life and see themselves within the characters. How effective do you think the camera work is? For this question I simply asked the audience to rate the camera work out of 5 (1 being poor 5 being brilliant). Even though this was a low budget production we still wanted to create the same effect as a professional music video, and have steady hand work and control with the cameras, movement, timing and speed of which were all key to fit in with the pace of the music. Asking this question enabled us to learn the viewers opinion on how professional the camera work appeared when comparing our video to one in the top charts. How effective do you think the editing and transitions are? Similarly for this question is gave the audience the opportunity to rate the effectiveness on the editing and transitions used within this video. The editing needed to be fast cuts of lots of short clips to keep up with the speed and pace of the music, so asking this question enabled the audience to judge whether we had completed this effectively; in time with the music. If the audience enjoy the editing and transitions theyre more likely to want to watch the video because they enjoy the visuals, which in the long run would increase sales and profits. Did you enjoy the Mise en scene used within the video? This question is straight forward in asking whether the audience enjoys the locations, props and costumes etc. it has been given extra line underneath the question for the audience to give their full

opinion on the music video, and where areas are weaker than others. This would also allow the audience to judge whether they think the Mise en scene makes the music video appeal to its music genre (for example are the characters in the correct styled costumes).

Did you find the length of the video suitable for a music video? This question is very straight forward, and simply requires the viewer to circle a yes or no answer. If the music video is too long people will lose interest and turn the video off, this will mean loss in audience and interest to our video, therefore asking this question ensures the audience is satisfied with the length of the video and they do not get bored while watching the video. Do you think the visuals linked to the lyrics effectively? I asked this question because I and Laura wanted to create a strong link between the lyrics and visuals, to create a narrative story alongside the music video which explains the lyrics to the song. This is connected to Goodwins theory that a music video should include a relationship between lyrics and visuals in order for it to be a successful music video, therefore asking this question will enable me to learn whether the audience thinks I have successfully completed this, by linking the lyrics and visuals together. Do you think the video reflects the genre of music? By asking the question the audience have to think back at the video and take in both the visuals and lyrics produced on the screen. Me and Laura decided that we did not want to make our video typically indie because this would be too mainstream and predictable, by making it completely different this would therefore make it appear truly indie. If the audience found this we would have successfully made an indie music video, different to the mainstream music videos seen in the top charts on television. Would you like to watch the music video again? This video simply asks the audiences whether they would happily watch the video again, if the audience circled yes, and then we had successfully created a good music video that attracts the audience with an eye catching storyline that people would like to watch more than once. Do you think the video promotes Ryan Helman as an artist? Due to Ryan being an unsigned artist, this music video is promoting him and his unique style of music because the audience are unaware of his talent and his voice. By asking this question it gives details whether the audience would like to hear further songs written by Ryan Helman promoting other work that he has created. This question is a simple ring around an answer; however I have added further lines if the audience feel need to make any comments on how they think the artist has been promoted. How would you rate the music video overall out of 5 This question asks the audience to look at the music video as a whole looking at everything together like camera work, editing, visuals, Mise en scene, costume etc., and whether they believed it worked well together and how they would scale it out of 5.

Is there anything you would improve on, to make it appeal to the audience more? This question allows the audience to feel part of the production work, if they are to complete it themselves, how they would change the video to improve it. This may be something that me and Laura had not thought of to make our music video appear more indie.

In your opinion, does the digipack reflect the genre of music (indie pop), if not why? By asking the audience this question this allows me to understand whether the audience believes that the digipack reflects a truly indie style cd cover. By asking random participants I was unaware whether the participant particularly likes indie music, however even if they do not they would still be aware what a typical indie cd cover looks like and could use this knowledge to compare it to my own cd cover. In your opinion, does the magazine advert reflect the genre of music (indie pop), if not why? By asking the audience this question this allows me to understand whether the audience believes that the digipack reflects a truly indie style advertisement. By asking random participants I was unaware whether the participant particularly likes indie music, however even if they do not they

would still be aware what a typical indie advert looks like and could use this knowledge to compare it to my own. I also want to know whether they believe it promotes my digipack and entices the audience to go and buy the album. Do you think all three media texts (the music video, advertisement and digipack) work well together? By asking this question it allows the audience to look at all 3 texts together, they should then compare them together and see if the all create a similar ideology and is similar to Goodwins theory and has interoperated his theory to create successful products. If they are similar, this means the audience can correctly identify they are related products and they all represent Ryan Helmans single Fun.

Would you as an audience want to buy the digipack after seeing the advertisement or music video? This question is asked to see whether the audience believes that the advert does promote the digipack and would entice by passers to look up the advert and see what the product is. If it does successfully do this, it could increase the amount of people who enjoy my product (audience numbers) and would also increase profits to those who want to watch my music video, then download the single or buy the album.

Are there any areas on the advertisement or digipack that you think could be improved? This question allowed the participants to feel part of my production and if I had time in the future to adapt either my digipack or advertisement I would look at their feedback and use this to update and improve my work.

What did I learn from my results? All of my results appeared to be fairly similar when overlooking my results; this could therefore mean that my audience who completed the surveys were not varied enough because I picked people at random. If I was to complete the questionnaire again, I would categorise them into specific music genres that they enjoy, therefore I could compare surveyors who both enjoy indie music against those who would not usually listen/watch an indie music video. However the results I had conducted showed that all of the people who had completed the questionnaire agreed that it was a successful music video, with professional elements throughout using strong editing techniques and camera movements. They also recognised that there was a comical ideology presented in all of the products, this was used through visuals in the music video, and the eggs on the advert and digipack appeared humorous and different. However there was also room for improvements on the length of the music video as the interviewees believed that the video was longer than the average music video, however this was because the recorded track was to this length and we did not want to cut it without

permission of Ryan Helman, if given the opportunity to edit the video then we could shorten the length of the music video to stop anyone becoming bored while watching the video. Gaining knowledge about people opinions on the digipack and advertisement helped me evaluate my own work. By using the same image on both the digipack and the advertisement the majority of the audience found that this helped linked to two products together and the image will soon become so familiar you will want to buy the album to understand what the random eggs are about. Due to having a strange image on the front this makes the products truly indie as no adverts contains eggs with drawn on emotions. The audience felt this gave the eggs a personality and allowed the audience to connect with the eggs on the adverts and front cover of the album. The audience did find however that there were a lot of different colours used on each of the panels of the digipack and there was not really a set colour theme used throughout, however I wanted to create this effect, because many digipack have one set colour to create a certain theme and use it throughout the album, to make mine truly indie I wanted to go against these usual conventions so mine appeared completely unique. Overall the audience enjoyed my products with minor constructive criticisms to improve my work, making them successful products.
