had best start learning the standards, the tunes that colleges, universities, and conservatories want you to play for admissions. Beyond that most of these jazz standards should be part of your knowledge base anyway if you want to gig or jam. There are a lot of standards in the Jazz world. These were selected by reviewing program requirements of the major conservatories and over 200 colleges and universities with Jazz majors/programs. The brighter color, along with the number (ex. 13) indicate that this is a standard used by a lot of schools. Bolds are current requirements from college and major showcase (GRAMMY, Jazz Band of America) lists. Check where you think you might want to audition to make sure that you start with specific tunes from this list that are useful, but the higher the number, the more standard the jazz standard! The more you know and can play, the more prepared you are! You cant get into showcases like Vail without knowing your tunes and your scales like the back of your hand. Audition for showcases whenever you and your instructors decide youre ready. This list was generated 4-15-13. Share with your private instructor and ask which ones work best for you. Set up a program to do them over the next couple of years. Get yourself a REAL BOOK (or the Real Book for iPad) for your instrument. Listen. Transcribe. Absorb. Dont wait until youre a Junior. It will be too late!

f you even THINK that you might play Jazz as either a career, or a gateway to college, you

Shedding

Shedding (Slang for taking your practice out to the woodshed where nobody will have to listen to you) is a must at least one hour a day. Every day. Time off for your birthday, holiday days, and if theyre wheeling you into surgery. You have to learn all of your required parts for school band, jazz band, orchestra AND get in these tunes. If youre playing sax, you should ask about doubling (flute for tenors, clarinet for altos). DSOA music students are sought after by colleges because they know our students have the work ethic. Jazz entry into college/conservatory is even tougher than going into concert/orchestral because there are fewer spots. Hard work gets rewarded. Get to it!
