An Introduction to Klaq |ear
play is 400 years old, it makes us think about the realities of life today.
An elderly parent gives up his title and lands and becomes dependent
on his adult children. This parent, however, is a king, one around
whom the affairs of a whole nation revolve.
As both father and king, Lear reveals his selfish desire to command
and control to a degree that is destructive, even as he relinquishes his
kingdom to his two elder daughters. Rather than prematurely abdicat-

Written records suggest that Shakespeare had completed King Lear
by May 1606. It is the dynamic centerpiece of three great tragedies
he wrote between the years 1604 and 1606: Othello, King Lear,
and Macbeth. Lear was first performed at court for King James I on
December 26, 1606.
King Lear is a wrenching, profound, and very poetic tragedy, set in the
pre-Norman, quasi-mythical period of British history. Although the
