BALLASTING METALARC LAMPS

The Metalarc amp ach eves ts high etf cacy and exce ent color charactelst cs from the add tives n the discharge The presence of metal iodides rn the amp lead to specia bai ast ng requ rements. The od de material makes t more d fficult to ion ze the gas n the arc tube and therefore a higher open circu t vo tage s required to start a i\l eta arc lamp. To provide qood umen ma ntenance a current crest factor of 1.8 or less dur ng operation s required Current crest factor is the ratio of peak to BMS current These requ rements are satisf ed by the ead peak autotransformer c rcu t which bu lds a peak on a sine waveform and satisfies the current crest factor requirement. Ba lasts with a s ne waveform are sat sfactory f the peak voltage rneets the m n mum requ rements of the spec fic
amp.
In add t on to starting and operating requtrements

re gnite it every half, cycle. This voltage requirement s higher wlth N,4eta arc amps than with mercury vapor lamps due to the presence of the meta od des. This reign tion vo tage s affected by the waveform of the current supplied to the amp during warmup. A ser es of shorl, high current pu ses wth a ong o{f time between them eads to a condition where arc conductiv ty dec nes signrficantly between current pulses. Th s eads to a h gher voitage requirement to reignite the larnps.

The presence of the add t ve system mposes sho(

term votage demands on the warmup. The lead peak c rcuit

bal ast durng satisf es these requirements. Circurt and ine vo tage re at onsh ps affect the phase re ation of the votage and current suppl ed to the amp These re ationsh ps must be cons dered n the desrgf of bal ast ng for [\,4etalarc
