dear friends
This year we titled the annual report Creating Futures With A Social Enterprise . It reflects the transformation that we as a traditional Community Rehabilitation Program have been experiencing now for some time. The vision that the Board and leadership developed about creating proprietary business lines to diversify our revenue stream and create more job opportunities has become a vivid reality in 2012 with the continuing growth of Ability Nation Scentsations and our scanning and document management operation. These initiatives enabled MVLE to offer employment to upward of 160 persons with significant disabilities. Also benefitting are many wounded and returning veterans, a deserving and talented group of men and women, often facing unemployment after heroically serving our country and being put in harms way. To better build this unfunded program, we renamed it Working Warrior Nation and are now seeking increased corporate partnerships, grants and private contributions for growth even beyond our state line. Together with our friends and Mentor-Protg Program partners at Northrop Grumman, we are providing vets significant job opportunities through our expanding Federal and AbilityOne contracts. These include positions on military facilities in Virginia and other states. We are one of the few non-profit organizations to be granted a facility clearance, which qualifies us to work on projects requiring our individuals to hold a U.S. Government SECRET clearance. Although the expanded business opportunities give MVLE much to celebrate, the past year has presented challenges unlike any previous year due to budget shortfalls from BRAC (loss of Walter Reed contract) and start-up costs for Ability Nation. Not to be forgotten: the everlooming threat of budget cuts on the Federal, State and local levels. Thanks to tireless advocacy efforts of our families and industry the cuts were somewhat diminished. MVLEs leadership in the community has not waivered: we played a strong role in the advocacy effort led by The Arc of Virginia surrounding the DoJ settlement with Virginia and the consent decree to move services from training centers to the community. We are happy to look back at a successful year in rehabilitation services. You can read the detailed report inside on page 11, but the bottom line is that MVLE grew the total number of jobs for individuals in various programs and centers, for example in our PSSG (Personal Support & Social Group) program. We also expanded the number of individuals served as well as the total service hours. MVLE has been active in regard to public out reach and was recognized by the TV news media, various community organizations and legislators for our accomplishments. We established our own YouTube channel, MVLE TV, and put more emphasis on social media. We are also bringing back the starfish story some of you may remember from a few years back. To us, it so perfectly captures our mission of making a difference one person at a time and it is good to be reminded of this every now and then. 1

After having merged the departments for Human Resources and Accounting last year, we continued our quest for more efficiency by restructuring and streamlining our Accounting Department. Together with improved use of technology, tasks including payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable are now better synchronized and can be processed faster. MVLE implemented an improved 401K plan that offers more choices and is less expensive. The new plan allows participating employees to individually determine their risk scenarios. A great breakthrough has been accomplished in regard to paid sick leave. A new policy was established that significantly improved coverage for all staff members. Each MVLE employee now has 100% sick pay for eight weeks to cover times of disability. That is a significant benefit rarely found in other companies. An affirmative action audit carried out at MVLE revealed there were no incidences of discrimination found at any level. MVLE has enrolled in a Wellness Plan with its health provider that will increase our staffs health and reduce cost by educating members on important health issues such as healthy eating, exercise, smoking, and weight control. This year we were successful again in further reducing staff turnover and decreasing the time to hire. We introduced benchmark profiles into our hiring process and are now better able to match the job with the right person.
Together with Brighter Strategies Consultants, MVLE offered its managers leadership training and workshops on what it means to be a professional.
TECHNOLOGY
MVLEs fleet of vans was equipped with a customized GPS system that can track the movements and position of our vehicles at any given time during business hours. We moved our entire IT infrastructure from our previous vendor in Maryland to INetU, a specialized IT host company located in Pennsylvania. INetU can now provide us with 24/7 customer service, dedicated servers for our data and Microsoft Exchange accounts and a guaranteed uptime of 99.9%. MVLE has started to use the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database software Salesforce after receiving ten free licenses from the Salesforce Foundation. This CRM tool helps us to keep track of all our outside contacts and can be helpful when planning fundraising events such as golf tournaments or our annual dinner.

MVLE President and CEO April Pinch-Keeler was the keynote speaker at a high-profile seminar called Lunch and Learn at the esteemed Norfolk State University. This seminar was co-hosted by the Northrop Grumman Corporation and the U.S. AbilityOne Commission to provide nonprofit agencies an opportunity to meet directly with prime contractors to address the issues AbilityOne providers face in expanding their organizations, meeting the needs of federal customers and establishing strong business relationships. Ken Rush, Vice President of Business and Contracts Development, sat on a panel and reported to the participants what to expect from a Mentor-Protg program and how MVLE has benefitted from its inclusion. MVLE on TV: In January 2012, news anchor Peggy Fox and her camera crew visited MVLE at the Fullerton site and filmed a report about our work and the integration of wounded warriors and individuals with disabilities in the production process of our Ability Nation Scentsations products. The report was broadcast the same day in the WUSA9 evening news on channel 9. You can view it on MVLEs new YouTube channel, MVLETV.
The annual dinner 2011 at the Waterford at Springfield venue marked the 40th Anniversary of MVLE and was attended by more than 600 people. Our esteemed keynote speaker was Susan Kot, Vice President of Corporate Contracts, Pricing and Supply Chain at Northrop Grumman. Attendees gave standing ovations for the performances of our performing arts class under the supervision of Performing Arts Director Paige Coffey. Through corporate and private sponsorships, we were able to raise $33,000 to support unfunded mandates and important programs at MVLE. Another highlight of the year was the 9th Annual MVLE Golf Tournament, bringing together about 100 golfers at the Springfield Golf & Country Club. The main attraction this year was the great show by Trick Shot artist and PING Golf Pro Josh Olson. He shot a hole straight through a board of thick plywood and amazed the crowd with unbelievable trick shots and 300 yard drives. The tournament raised about $80,000 ,the net proceeds of which went to subsidizing the Working Warriors program at MVLE as well as Ability Nation.

Over the recent years, MVLE has been successfully building capacities to process large quantities of digitization assignments for industry and government. The number of digital scanning done by MVLE individuals has increased an incredible amount from last year. Advances in technology allow persons with a disability to be as productive as a non-disabled worker. Our business line, DigitalStream, recently renamed MVLE Document Management Services, has produced thirteen new jobs this year for people with disabilities and our Working Warriors. MVLE offers its customers the newest technology in Digital Document Services and its staff a challenging and interesting work environment. Managing and digitizing large volumes of documents demands significant skills from our workers, which they deliver on a daily basis. The requirements go from removing thousands of staples from previously filed hard copy documents to putting the digital files back together in the right order.
M V L E 2 012 A N N U A L R E P O R T
When MVLE made the decision a few years back to venture into the unknown by actually manufacturing a product and bringing it to the consumer, this was a visionary move that not everyone embraced. Some may even have doubted that our workers would be able to produce the potpourri cubes and sachets in amounts necessary for retail distribution. To the contrary, the success of our business line Ability Nation Scentsations has surpassed all expectations and some of the business plan goals were reached two years ahead of time. We have since created 160 new jobs for our individuals and veterans. The teams working on these products are very efficient and enthusiastic about every new fragrance and every new design. The fiscal year 2012 was truly a Scentsational year for our social enterprise. The first challenge of 2011 was rebranding our line of floral products from Good Scents to Ability Nation Scentsations, which we felt was a better approach and a name we could trademark. The new name creates a unifying
specialist enabled MVLE to achieve cost control by purchasing all basic materials at negotiated flat rates. In addition, by employing IT and data management expertise, an infrastructure was built that is successfully managing warehouse inventories, retail sales, data exchanges, and sales analytics for all Ability Nation products. Ability Nation is on the road for continued growth by utilizing product research in order to introduce new product lines, offer design changes in packaging, and add regional markets. For that, we are seeking to cooperate with other interested CRPs in and out of state. Our vision of the true Nation we are building with Ability Nation is becoming a reality.

In support of increasing sales, Ability Nation focused on establishing a procurement network for purchasing products and services that reduced production expenses by 60% over the past 12 months. Using a procurement
MVLE has continued to improve the lives of people with disabilities by constantly reaching out to the federal government and creating job opportunities for our individuals, either through NISH and AbilityOne, or directly. We have also made major advances in placing wounded warriors and returning vets into government contracts through our Working Warriors program and partnering with large defense primes such as Northrop Grumman. ABILITYONE REPORT The AbilityOne Program is the largest source of employment for people who are blind or have significant disabilities in the United States. More than 600 nonprofit organizations such as MVLE employ these individuals and provide quality products and services to the federal government at a fair market price. AbilityOne calls for 75% of the contractors direct labor to have a documented disability. During FY2012, MVLE won new federal contracts providing janitorial services to NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. and the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. We also won the contract to provide NISH Headquarters in Vienna with custodial services. These new contracts are creating up to 30 jobs for people with significant disabilities MVLEs current contracts employ over 35 people with disabilities, including two wounded warriors performing janitorial and custodial services at:
Humphreys Engineering Center at Fort Belvoir, VA; Bureau of Land Management in Lorton, VA; Bostetter Courthouse in Alexandria, VA; MVLE is also a subcontractor at the U.S. Department of Energys Forrestal Building in Washington, D.C.
MVLE DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT SERVICES MVLEs Document Management Services, formerly known as DigitalStream, specializes in high-speed scanning, digital imaging, and customized conversion solutions. We have been growing the business with new and repeat federal and commercial customers that include Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Peace Corps, and Northrop Grummans Information Systems Sector. As the only non-profit accepted into the Department of Defense Mentor-Protg Program, MVLEs Document Management Services is applying the support and mentorship of Northrop Grumman, to achieve ISO 9001 compliance (International Service Standards quality management standards). MVLE expects to be ISO 9001 fully certified in October 2012.

COMMITMENT TO OUR AMERICAN HEROES: THE WORKING WARRIOR NATION Throughout our government contract approach, we strive to place wounded warriors and returning veterans wherever possible. We believe this to be a win-win for all involved. The hiring authority receives experienced and highly trained ex-military staff to run operations on bases or secured facilities, and the returning service men and women enjoy employment in an environment known to them and can apply their skill-set in a meaningful job. Several of our vets are employed in MVLEs Document Management Services and AbilityOne federal janitorial contracts where clearances are required. By working as a subcontractor for Sparta, a Division of Parsons, MVLE is supplying wounded warriors for the Missile Defense Agencys program called MIDEASS. In conjunction with our close working relationship with Northrop Grummans Technical Services sector and Information Systems sector, MVLE has submitted bids as a subcontractor to
M V L E 2 012 A N N U A L R E P O R T
support the Army procurement (EAGLE) and the Missile Defense Agencys procurement called JRDC. If awarded, both of these subcontracts will create job opportunities for wounded warriors. MVLEs Working Warriors initiative was recognized by an evening news report on Channel 9 (WUSA9) in January. Reporter Peggy Fox reported on the success of integrating former service men and women into our scanning and potpourri business lines.
Working Warrior Nation is a program specifically designed by MVLE to help wounded warriors and returning veterans find meaningful private sector employment. The program provides returning military personnel with customized skills and on-the-job training that will help them upgrade their existing skills and experience to meet the criteria of corporate employers. Working Warrior Nation also reaches out to the business community to find appropriate job matches and general support for our heroes. Due to MVLEs 40 years of experience in career transitioning and job development for individuals with disabilities, our Working Warrior Nation initiative fully supports our mission of creating futures one person at a time for people with disabilities through employment and support services.
By date of publication of this annual report, we have renamed the Working Warriors Initiative to Working Warrior Nation.

johns story
By Lauren Miller, Friend of MVLE and volunteer writer
Six years ago, MVLE employee John Wiles, was a totally different person according to his caregiver, Prudencia Ngundam. Performing daily tasks were a huge struggle for him because he simply had no desire to do them. That was before he came to work for MVLE. Six years ago was also when John first joined MVLE, and since then, he has come a long way and made a lot of progress according to his support staff. John works with MVLE folding newspapers and letters. He also works with the potpourri for MVLEs Ability Nation Scentsations. He even helps other individuals with potpourri nowadays. For the past several years, John has been coming into MVLE for work every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. As opposed to six years ago, John now looks forward to coming into work and seeing his friends.
JOHNS PERSONAL AND WORK SUCCESSES ARE ACHIEVEMENTS ANYONE WOULD BE PROUD TO ACCOMPLISH. Tracy Hanson, Chantilly Program Manager
John is a sweet, funny, and fun loving individual with a lot of interests. John lives in a group home with six other individuals. There he spends his time hanging out with the others, watching WWE, and going out to eat. John says he loves to watch WWE and Smackdown, and that Hulk Hogan is his favorite wrestler. Every Friday, the individuals go out to eat and take turns choosing where to go. When its Johns turn to choose, he says he likes to go to Wendys, where he gets to pay with his own paychecks that hes earned at MVLE. His favorite things to order are a Diet Coke, French fries, and a hamburger. Every other weekend, he also goes home to Manassas to spend time with his mother. John also loves music. His favorite genre is Doo Wop and he really likes the Everly Brothers. John loves getting to bring in his own CDs during MVLEs music therapy sessions. Johns caregivers Prudencia Ngundam and Julianna Boatng have been with him for about six years. They both agree that John has come a long way from where he was six years ago and claim that working with MVLE has had a lot to do with the changes they see in John. They say it gives him something to look forward to and that working for his own paycheck has done a lot of good for him. John really likes to come to MVLE to work and his caregivers sincerely believe that this has really helped to motivate him in his daily life and gives him something to look forward to.

By Ashley Welch, MVLE Transition Specialist
The transition from school to work is never easy, but the road is even more uncertain for young adults with disabilities. They and their families rely on a network of support services to guide them in the right direction, but there are often bumps in the road and resources are limited. In an effort to assist families and young adults with this journey, MVLE offers a variety of programs, jobs, and support services to help meet each individuals needs. Over the past forty-one years, MVLE has continuously worked to achieve its mission of Creating Futures, One Person at a Time, and we know how critical the transition from school to work can be. MVLE has a proven track record of successfully guiding new graduates through the transition process by helping them identify their career interests and support needs through situational assessments and person-centered planning. During a situational assessment, new graduates have the opportunity to try a hands-on approach to day support and career exploration. This process gives the graduate the chance to experience a placement or job, either in the Center or in the community, before making their choice. This is a vital component of the transition process because the experience enables the student and his or her circle of support to make informed decisions about the most appropriate match. As the Transition Specialist at MVLE, it is my job to ensure that this process goes as smoothly as possible and that the individual being assessed receives a fair and appropriate assessment. In addition to coordinating assessments, Im a liaison between internal and external stakeholders; Im a source of information for families and individuals taking their first steps into life after school; and Im a source of information for staff at MVLE to support them in their jobs when working with new individuals. Most of all, I am an advocate for adults with disabilities. When a new referral comes my way, its not just another packet of information that crosses my desk containing bits of historical data. Its a person with dreams, fears, needs, and interests, and its my job to provide resources and access to opportunities that can help them achieve those dreams. Over the past year, I have helped 24 adults successfully transition into various programs and jobs within MVLE and coordinated over 40 assessments. Some of them brought a wealth of experience and knew exactly where they wanted to work; others had little experience but a positive attitude and the spirit to try new things. Whatever their experience or interests, I and many other MVLE staff were here to guide and assist them in making informed choices about their future careers. Life is constant transition; MVLE is here to assist with yours.

Sabrina Gibson, MVLEs volunteer coordinator, had quite the busy year in 2012, helping to align a total of 205 volunteers who logged 2,042 hours with individuals and programs they would enjoy. I love meeting new people and volunteering at MVLE is such a unique experience. It thrills me to match volunteers with a program they enjoy, said Sabrina of her job. Volunteers range anywhere from students to retired senior citizens who are all looking to give back to the community. Most volunteers are found through the internet using free volunteering sites such as Volunteermatch.com. Volunteers participate in a large number of enjoyable events such as a book club, art therapy, music therapy, aerobics, yoga, pet therapy, and cooking classes. Volunteers and individuals come together for a variety of
different therapies, classes, and other various events. Not all volunteers work directly with the individuals, however; there are some that help out behind the scenes as well. Sabrina also puts out a detailed theme calendar every month so that each MVLE site knows what volunteer events are going to occur and when. This helps the MVLE staff know when to expect volunteers so that they can work together to provide a good volunteering experience. Sabrinas favorite event this year was the volunteer luncheon that was held in April during National Volunteers Week. Its a lot of work but its my baby. Im in charge of everything and its always a lot of fun, said Sabrina. The luncheon had a 50s theme entitled Volunteers Rock. Cracker Barrel donated 50s themed candy that was given to the volunteers as well. The volunteers were recognized for their hard work this year. Lunch was provided, games were played, and the volunteers received some awesome gifts.

john wiles
mvle chantilly center (facility-based)
John Wiles exemplifies how time, opportunity and motivation can build a good life (read Johns Story on page 10). When John began at MVLEs Chantilly Production Program in March 2006, his motivation was indifferent. He kept mostly to himself, rarely talking or interacting with co-workers. As he gained work experience at MVLE, John started showing pride in his work accomplishments and expertise. Over time, his motivation, attendance, and interaction with co-workers grew. His diligence and hard work on assigned tasks made John a natural choice for working on MVLEs new line of business -producing and selling potpourri. In addition to completing all the necessary tasks to make the final product, John has become the expert and typically takes the lead on organizing the teams doing the job, provides instruction, and also completes a quality check on the final product. His peers look to him for guidance and he offers it with cheer.
