Suggested product-documentation classifications and disclaimers

(From JEDEC

Council Ballot JCB-96-18, formulated under the cognizance of JC-10 Committee on Terms

and Definitions.)

In order to improve understanding between manufacturers and users, a consistent set of product-documentation classifications associated with the stages of product development has been developed. The following is suggested for use on data sheets, brochures, catalogs, new-product bulletins, etc.

Product Stage Formative Design

Classification and Front-Page Banner PRODUCT PREVIEW (Date)

Suggested Wording of Disclaimer (Located on front page) This document contains information on a product under development. (Company) reserves the right to change or discontinue this product without notice.

A product-preview document is used to advise customers of proposed additions to a product line. The minimal specifications given are only targets or goals and may be changed in almost any manner without notice. Product-preview documents are typically used for several months and often undergo updates as a result of marketing surveys or feedback from prospective customers. It is not intended that any design be based on this document. In the worst case, the proposed product might not go beyond a market survey and may never reach production.

Product Stage Sampling, Preproduction or 1st Production

Classification and Front-Page Banner ADVANCE INFORMATION (Date)

Suggested Wording of Disclaimer (Located on front page) This document contains information on a new product. Specifications and information herein are subject to change without notice.

After the first prototypes are generated, an advance-information document is used to advise customers of the proposed addition to the product line. Sample devices have preproduction status. This document will typically contain more substantial information including interfacing with the users system, some specifications, and limited

applications information. Samples should meet the specifications contained in the advance-information document. Specification details may be changed later without notice; if absolute maximum ratings are changed, they should be improved rather than I downgraded.

Product Stage Sampling Preproduction

Classification and Front-Page Banner PRELIMINARY INFORMATION (Date)

Suggested Wording of Disclaimer (Located on front page) This document contains information on a preproduction product. Specifications and information herein are subject to change without notice.

A preliminarv-information document describes preproduction or first production devices and-is usually indicative of production-stage performance. Minor changes should be expected as characteristics spreads become better controlled. Specification details may be changed slightly without notice; if absolute maximum ratings are changed, they should improve rather than be downgraded.

Product Stage

Classification Definitive Data

Suggested Wording of Disclaimer (Company) reserves the right to change the detail specifications as may be required to permit improvements in the design of its products,

Production Production Data

A definitive-data or production-data document defines the long-term specified production limits. It includes a disclaimer to allow improvements in specifications and modifications that do not affect form, fit, or function (see also, JESD46, Guidelines for User Notification of Product/Process Changes by Semiconductor Suppliers") in original applications; if absolute maximum ratings are changed, they should improve rather than be downgraded.
