We've Got Spirit

Lesson Text: Rom. 8:7-16
I. Introduction
A. Famous Cheer - "We've Got Spirit"
1. Loudest side has more spirit.
2. Today - more emotional and visibly demonstrative is more spiritual.
B. Being spiritual is grossly misunderstood.
C. Today we will examine three distinct questions:
1. Do we have Spirit?
2. What does it mean to be spiritual?
3. How can we boost our spirituality?
II.Do We Have Spirit?
A. The Holy Spirit does dwell in Christians.
1. 1Co 6:19-20 ESV Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the
Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
(20) for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
2. We should be led by the Spirit; Read Romans 8:7-26
3. Christ and God also dwell in us; God- 1 Jn 4:12-15; Jesus Eph. 3:17
B. The Million Dollar question, how do we know we have the spirit dwelling in us?
1. Asked teens in GA;We can not always trust our feelings or ourselves
2. Jeremiah 10:23 ESV I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in
himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
3. Proverbs 14:12 ESV There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end
is the way to death.
4. But Bro. Jimmy I know that the Spirit led me, or caused me to....
5. Read 1 John 5:1-5; Gal. 1:6-9
C. Let's not think, but know!!!; Act_2:38;
1. Forgiveness of Sins and gift promised to all; Acts 2:39 ESV For the
promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off,
everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."
2. If you have not been BAPTIZED YOU DO NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT!!!
3. Given to all that obey; Acts 5:32 And we are witnesses to these things,
and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
4. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 ESV (16) Do you not know that you are God's
temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? (17) If anyone destroys
God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are
that temple.
 5. Watch what you say about the church.
III. What Does it Mean to be Spiritual?
A. Many people in the world today believe themselves to be spiritual.
1. I'm not religious but I am spiritual.
2. In N.T. Greek word for spiritual - πνευματικος (pneumatikos) - not found
in Sept. or in the Gospels. Word not used until after Pentecost Acts 2:
3. Not all spiritual is good; spiritual beings; Eph 6:12 ESV For we do not
wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
4. Spiritual Gifts (miraculous) ends at Apostles 1 Cor. 13:8-12
B. Without Baptism one cannot be spiritual in a Godly sense
1. Spiritual blessings found in Christ; Ephesians 1:3 ESV Blessed be the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
2. Romans 6:3-4; Gal. 3:27
C. Christians are to be Spiritual
1. Even Babes in Christ must grow to be spiritual; 1 Corinthians 3:1
2. Spiritual (mature Christians) must attempt to restore the erring; Gal 6:1
3. Christians required to sing spiritual songs to one another. Things
pertaining to things heavenly, or Godly (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)
4. As Christians we must offer Spiritual sacrifices; 1 Peter 2:5 ESV you
yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a
holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through
Jesus Christ.
IV.How Can we Boost Our Spirituality
A. Energy Drinks boost our energy; living God’s Word boost our Spirituality
1. Spirituality – a state of being led by the Holy Spirit
2. We are led through the Word of God
B. Bear the Fruit of the Spirit, Read Gal. 5:22-26
C. What can I do?
1. Read your Bible more
2. Attend BS, SE, Wed.
3. Participate in teaching
4. Help with Gospel Meeting
5. Pray for the church, and our elders daily
6. Criticize less, encourage more
